Dr. Art Canestrari, of Cumberland, and his friend Claire DiSpirito, of Lincoln, check out one of the units at 2 Monument Square during a Main Street Open House on Saturday. Dr. Canestrari stated he was interested in seeing the buildings on Main Street and their potential. The office space at which he is looking is one of six units available in the building.

Schools rehire 28 teachers

WOONSOCKET – The School Committee voted to rehire another 28 of its laid-off teachers following a special meeting in the Middle School on Thursday.
School Committeeman Christopher Roberts said the rehired teachers were in a mix of positions in local schools including physical education, math, family and consumer science, and counseling that were issued notices of layoffs this spring.

BURRILLVILLE – They rest in sections of local cemeteries that don’t often draw visitors but the town’s old soldiers of the Civil War still have stories to tell.
Betty Mencucci, president of the Burrillville Historical Society and a local history expert, hopes to put those stories in people’s minds this weekend while offering a tour of the town’s Civil War grave sites today beginning at 2 p.m. at Pascoag Cemetery and St. Patrick’s Cemetery off Route 107, Pascoag.

Martin wins in Northmen 5K's return to road racing

NORTH SMITHFIELD — A year away from the road racing circuit and temperatures in the mid-80s couldn’t zap the electricity of the Northmen 5K Challenge on Saturday morning.
Nearly 300 runners and walkers braved the hot weather to take part in the 3.1-mile race at North Smithfield High and the final fundraiser of the school year for the North Smithfield Athletic Association, the boosters club for the town’s scholastic and community athletic programs.
