Lending a helping hand: Middlebrooks shows PawSox SS Bogaerts the ropes at third base

June 27, 2013

PAWTUCKET – Xander Bogaerts took groundballs at McCoy Stadium on Thursday afternoon, a pregame ritual that the promising shortstop has down to a science.
This particular day was different. Not only was Bogaerts taking grounders at third base, but – as an added bonus – he was the under the tutelage of someone who knows a thing or two about manning the hot corner.

Store owners toast tweak of booze tax

June 27, 2013

When Gov. Lincoln Chafee was touring storm-ravaged Glocester in the days after Hurricane Sandy slammed into the East Coast, liquor store owner Kevin Kitson had a chance to talk to him about business matters and one of the issues that came up was the state’s 7 percent sales tax on alcohol.
Kitson, longtime owner of Christy’s Liquors in Chepachet, told Chafee that not only would eliminating the sales tax on alcohol put more money in his pocket, it would help him and other Rhode Island liquor store owners better compete with tax-free Massachusetts.

Local ACOs oppose removal of ban on pit bulls

June 27, 2013

WOONSOCKET – The bill was championed by animal rights groups and boosters of that most controversial of canines, the pit bull.
But Pawtucket Animal Control Officer John Holmes says state lawmakers won’t be doing the dogs any favors if they prohibit cities and towns from enforcing local bans on pit bulls.
The city banned “pits” in 2004 after a series of attacks on pets and humans that caused serious injuries. Authorities also suspected illegal dog fights were being staged in Pawtucket after finding the mangled remains of deceased animals abandoned like trash.

Middlebrooks doesn’t plan to stay with PawSox for long

June 26, 2013

PAWTUCKET – Will Middlebrooks spoke so softly that it felt as if the PawSox clubhouse had been transformed into a church.

The struggling third baseman didn’t attempt to mask his disappointment regarding a season that has hardly gone according to plan. For the moment, finding a silver lining in the fact that he was sent down is an impossible endeavor. It probably didn’t ease Middlebrooks’ frustration that Wednesday’s Red Sox-Rockies’ game was being featured on the clubhouse’s main television.
