Cumberland American earns spot in District 4 semis

CUMBERLAND — Must-win pressure? Cumberland American showed zero signs of it on Wednesday night in its Pool A finale against Scituate-Foster.
Needing a victory to cement a spot in Friday’s District 4 Major Division semifinals at Ayotte Field, CALL cruised to its third triumph in four games by mercy-ruling S-F, 14-3, in four innings at Garvin Field.

Burrillville rolls past Glocester for fourth straight win

BURRILLVILLE — Immediately following the Burrillville All-Stars’ 13-1 drubbing of Glocester in the Pool B finale of the R.I. Little League District IV Major Division (11-12) All-Star Tournament on Wednesday night, Burrillville mentor Bob Gelinas asked his kids to take a lap around the outskirts of the Richard Peck Complex’s Rymanski Field.
He then met with his troops in short right for a few minutes before they packed up their gear to play another day.

WOONSOCKET – What do the Boston Red Sox, the Rhode Island Community Food Bank and the Audubon Society of Rhode Island all have in common?
If you’ve driven through Little Rhody on the interstates often enough, you may already know – they’re among a handful of organizations authorized to raise charitable funds through the sale of customized license plates issued by the Division of Motor Vehicles.
Now it looks like the DMV’s crop of Special Design Charity Plates will get an addition that’s as homegrown as meat pies and dynamites: the Villa Novan Pride registration plate.

Woman charged with leaving dog in hot car

LINCOLN – A 30-year-old Cumberland woman faces a charge of mistreatment of animals after allegedly leaving a small dog unattended in a hot car on Monday.
Patrolman Kevin Marcoux reported being called to the vehicle by Twin River Security at approximately 6:15 p.m. The small dog could be seen in the front seat of the vehicle with the windows down a small amount, according to Marcoux. No water appeared to have been left in the vehicle for the dog, he added.

Police make first gaming arrest at Twin River

LINCOLN — Colonel Steven G. O’Donnell, superintendent of the Rhode Island State Police and Commissioner of Public Safety, announces the first arrest at the Twin River Casino relating to the integrity of table games.
At 2:45 a.m. on July 10, a member of the State Police Gaming Enforcement Unit (GEU) arrested Steven E. Sabitoni, 46, of School Road, Lincoln, on one count of larceny under $1,500.

WOONSOCKET- Zachary R. Costello, 24, of Woonsocket, died July 8, 2013 in his home. He was the son of Diane L. (Lemay) Costello of Woonsocket and the late Richard E. Costello.
He had previously lived in Blackstone and Millville.
Zachary was a welder for Matrix Power Services, Pascoag for six years. He loved hunting, fishing and four wheeling. Zachary was very well liked by others and enjoyed spending time with his friends.

WOONSOCKET- Pauline C. (Belisle) Phillips, 92, of Woonsocket passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 10, 2013 at the Ballou Home. She was the beloved wife of the late Russell T. Phillips, Sr.
Born in Woonsocket, RI on May 21, 1921, she was the daughter of the late George and Emelda (Deziel) Belisle.
