Brian Doyle back in the winner's circle at Arnold Mills Road Race

CUMBERLAND – The old phrase “Familiarity breeds contempt” took a beating at the Arnold Mills Four-Mile Road Race on steamy Fourth of July morning.

Perhaps a better way to put the overall mood after Northeastern University junior-to-be Brian Doyle, the 20-year-old son of former Ocean State marathon great Bobby Doyle, crossed the finish line in a cautious but solid winning time of 21:07: The mutual admiration society.

Man sets fire to his own home, police say

UXBRIDGE – A 43-year-old Uxbridge man was arrested Wednesday night after police charged him with setting fire to his own home on Albee Road.
Christian Carven, 43, of 4 Albee Road, was charged and arraigned in Uxbridge District 5 Court Friday on one count of arson in a dwelling.

RIDE releases rankings - N. Smithfield High among the 24 commended

North Smithfield High School and the Jacqueline M. Walsh School for the Performing Arts in Pawtucket were among the 24 schools Tuesday designated as 2013 commended schools, the highest classification in the Rhode Island Department of Education’s annual public school rankings.
So-called “commended” schools have the highest index scores in the state, no achievement gaps and are recognized because of either high performance or for making significant progress.
