August 25, 2013

On the surface, Xander Bogaerts is this year’s answer to Baltimore’s Manny Machado. Both are talented 20-year-olds with left-side-of-the-infield pedigree who have skyrocketed up the organizational ladder, each making their respective debut on an American League East squad during the height of a playoff race.

Lincoln High’s newest Lions ‘Roar’

August 25, 2013

LINCOLN – Starting out as a freshman student in high school can be much easier if there are a few familiar faces at the school when the first day of school arrives.

That’s why Lincoln High School Principal Kevin McNamara, staff members of the school and upperclassmen were out in the school’s parking lot on Wednesday for the annual Freshmen Roar night.

Freshmen and their parents could meet the students’ teachers, take a tour of the high school, and also sign up for extracurricular activities such as sports or afterschool clubs.

WOONSOCKET – When students at the high school walk into the school’s gym when the new school year begins on Wednesday they may not believe their eyes.

The gym floor was refinished this summer and looks as shiny and new as it did when the school was opened in 1972.
School Department Facilities Director Peter Fontaine said the work was part of several improvement projects completed at local schools over the summer and will be eligible for 81 percent state aid reimbursements.

Abandoned property plaguing Blackstone

BLACKSTONE – The town is ramping up efforts
to get tough on eyesore properties and recoup a
whopping $170,000 in delinquent fines owed by
the owners of more than a dozen blighted, abandoned
properties in town.

“We’re seeing a rise in these abandoned, vacant
properties, where the windows are broken and boarded
up and the lawns and yards are unkempt and overgrown,”
said William Walsh, the town’s code enforcement
officer. “They’ve become blighted areas that are having
a real impact on property values.”
