SEEKONK â At the annual Arnold Mills Road Race in Cumberland on Fourth of July morning, former St. Raphael Academy and current Hendricken High coaching icon Jimmy Doyle was plenty busy taking mile splits of nephews Brian and Connor.
And for good reason: He wanted to know just how fast his late brotherâs kids were running.
They didnât disappoint, as 20-year-old Brian captured the Open Division title with a four-mile clocking of 21:07, and kid brother Connor, 18, took third in 21:26.
BRISTOL, Conn. â Lincoln All-Starsâ assistant coach Marty Gaughan Sr. had a feeling his team would face South Burlington, Vt. ace Sammy Premsagar in the third game of this Little League New England Regional Tournament on Monday afternoon.
Thatâs why he took all necessary measures to prepare the kids offensively.
âThey say heâs a real fireballer; thatâs why I just spent the last hour pitching batting practice to them,â he said perhaps 40 minutes before the tilt. âI was throwing them 100-mph heaters so theyâd be ready.â
WOONSOCKET â Even 35 years ago, when this was a more robust city, Phyllis H. Thomas was a rare breed â a doctorâs wife who became a social activist instead of socialite.
After her death Thursday at the age of 93, itâs unlikely the city will see her kind again any time soon, says John Dionne, a former president of the City Council who knew her well.
âYou donât find dedicated people like that,â he says. âPeople donât want to get involved anymore.â
