WEST WARWICK -- As a light drizzle started to find its way to McCarthy Field, the tides of the American Legion âFinal Eightâ winnersâ bracket final changed on one pitch.
With Upper Deck Post 86/14 holding a 3-1 lead in the top of the sixth inning, Navigant Credit Unionâs E.J. Torres stepped in the box with the bases loaded and two outs. Facing a full count, Torres blasted an opposite-field double to left field.
That hit emptied the bases and gave Navigant a 4-3 lead, one that Post 85 would improve all the way to a 12-3 final.
PAWTUCKET â Was Bryce Brentz resigned to the possibility that his season was over upon undergoing significant surgery to his right knee? A rollover-and-surrender attitude wouldnât fit the PawSox outfielderâs hard-charging persona now, would it?
That said, the power hitter is a realist and understands the slippery slope that comes with accelerating the rehab timetable in order to return to the field this season.
BRISTOL â Milliseconds after southpaw Brendan Wright had fielded an easy grounder and thrown to first baseman Jayden Struble for the final out on Thursday evening, Cumberland American's All-Stars came from all directions to celebrate mere feet in front of home plate.
Not surprisingly, the one on the bottom of the pile happened to be second baseman Johnny Belisle, one of the more vociferous members of this splendid contingent.
WOONSOCKET â Janette Adams was asleep in her first floor apartment at 7 Veterans Way when she heard a crash Thursday morning that nearly knocked her out of bed.
Squinting through the blinds of her bedroom window, Adams did a double-take when she saw the front end of a late model Winnebago-style motor home stuck in the mangled front porch of the multi-family apartment building.
The 20-foot-plus RV slammed into the front of the building just after 11:30 a.m., lodging itself in the front porch, which was nearly torn off the building.
