PawSox vets were key to Boston’s A.L. East flag

BOSTON – Gary DiSarcina and Rich Sauveur thought they were positioned well out of harm’s way. Perched in a far corner inside the champagne-soaked, music-blaring, jolly-good-time party scene that was the Red Sox’ clubhouse following last Friday’s division clincher, the two Pawtucket Red Sox coaches were more than content to be innocent bystanders.

But what soon followed was a moment that could very well summarize the impact that DiSarcina, Sauveur and the rest of the 2013 PawSox had on the newly minted American League East champs.

Greyhound attacked by pit bull dies

NORTH SMITHFIELD – The rescue greyhound from Saint Paul Street that was attacked by a neighbor’s pit bull has died as a result of its injuries, family members have confirmed.
Mike Calo said the dog, Lady, succumbed Friday afternoon in an East Greenwich veterinary hospital, one week after the mauling.
He said the cause of death was heart failure due to complications resulting from the attack.

WOONSOCKET- Sherman Williams Jr. 63, of Transit St., died Saturday September 21, 2013 in the Phillip Hulitar Inpatient Center with his family by his side. He was the husband of Evelyn (Jette) Williams.
Born in Baltimore, Maryland, son of the late Sherman and Goldie Lee (Fergerson) Williams Sr.
He worked on the assembly line at General Motors for 34 years and also as a certified welder and truck mechanic for Atlas Pallet prior to retiring.
He was a United States Army Veteran.
He also was a member of the Amvets Fairmount Post 85.

Rene Soucy, 86, formerly of Lemoyne, died Sunday, September 22, 2013 in Manor Care Carlisle.
He was a retired Inventory Manager for the former Navy Ships Parts Control Center, Hampden Twp. and a WWII Navy Veteran.
Rene was born in Woonsocket, RI to the late Adelard and Eva (Gelinas) Soucy.
He is survived by his daughter Jennifer E. Soucy of Mechanicsburg and two sons, Timothy R. Kopp of Leesburg, VA and Joshua S. Kopp of Etters; and two grandchildren, Peyton A. Kopp and Joshua S. Kopp, Jr.

The Call to host debate Oct. 4

In an effort to allow voters to better understand each mayoral candidate’s stance on the issues facing the city and its residents, The Call will sponsor a mayoral debate on Friday, Oct. 4, from 7-9 p.m. in the City Council chambers.
The debate panel will include: Call reporter Russ Olivo; The Call and The Times' political reporter and columnist Jim Baron; Roger Bouchard, owner of WNRI radio; and a representative of WOON radio. Call Executive Editor Bianca Pavoncello will be the moderator for the debate.

Security cameras capture careless smoking in S. Main St. fire that displaced 18

WOONSOCKET – Security cameras helped investigators quickly zero in on careless disposal of a cigarette as the cause of a house fire at 631 South Main St. Sunday that left 18 people homeless and two firefighters injured.
The elaborate surveillance system was maintained by the owner of the three-story tenement near Great Road and captured images of a tenant smoking on the first-floor porch shortly before the three-alarm fire engulfed the dwelling, said Mike Sweeney, chief of investigations for the state fire marshal’s office.

MILLVILLE- Steven J. Krawczyk, 84, of Prospect St. Millville, MA. Passed away peacefully on Friday at the Lydia Taft Nursing Home in Uxbridge with his family at his side.
He was the loving husband to Christine (Stoltz) Krawczyk and loving father to Brian McManus of Millville.
During the years of his illness, Christine and Brian provided the most loving care and gave all their attention that they could possibly do, so Steven would be as comfortable as could be.
