September 25, 2013

WOONSOCKET – The appeal filed by the local school department and Pawtucket in a challenge of the adequacy of the state aid formula for distressed urban districts could be heading to a hearing by the state Supreme Court.

Stephen Robinson, a Rhode Island education attorney hired by the communities, gave the Woonsocket School Committee that forecast while updating it on the legal case during the panel’s meeting in the Woonsocket Middle School cafeteria Wednesday.

Out with grass, in with synthetic turf at Cumberland High

September 25, 2013

CUMBERLAND — A summer-long project to replace the natural grass football field at Tucker Field with state-of-the-art synthetic turf is nearly complete, but whether or not it will be ready in time for the first home game of the season on Oct. 4 is still up in the air.

Woonsocket plays well in field hockey loss to S.K.

September 25, 2013

WOONSOCKET --- In a season where wins have been difficult to come by, Woonsocket had its share of highlights in its Division I crossover affair against South Kingstown at Barry Field.
Topping that list was the fact that the Villa Novans, after getting shut out in their first six games of the season, finally found the back of the net – not once, but twice.
The Villa Novans also kept play in the Rebels’ end of the field through the better part of the end of the second half, and they played hard right to the final whistle as if they were competing in a one-goal game.

PAWTUCKET — Belying a kindly face and cheery demeanor, the words “tenacious” and “pugnacious” often pop up when people describe Herb Weiss. That artful blend of being able to act like a pit bull while possessing the personality of, say, a Labrador has contributed to the city official's success and led to his being recognized with the Blackstone Valley Excellence in Arts and Business Award from the Blackstone Valley Tourism Council this year.

Council candidates bemoan Budget Commission, city's negative image, at election forum

September 25, 2013

WOONSOCKET – It’s never too late to say you’re sorry – for calling in the Budget Commission, that is.
As they gathered for their first public debate at Chan’s Tuesday, nearly every member of the City Council who voted for the state-appointed panel in 2012 said they regretted the decision. Even council challengers who had nothing to do with the decision to seat the panel said the commission must go.
“We need to tell them to stop treating our council like dirt,” said challenger Kathryn M. Dumais. “We need to take back Woonsocket.”
