Lavallee comes back from microfracture knee surgery to rule competition in inaugural Novans Pride 5K

September 22, 2013

WOONSOCKET — If you hadn’t heard of Roland Lavallee or seen him in action, you’d have a difficult time believing that the former Mount St. Charles standout was competing in his first race in nearly a year and a half, or was 13 months removed from microfracture surgery to his knee, during Sunday morning’s Novans Pride 5K.

Pastor remodels facility for Woonsocket’s homeless men

September 21, 2013

WOONSOCKET – When it comes to ministering to the homeless, Associate Pastor Steve Bacon is a hands-on kind of guy.

In the basement of Harvest Community Church, he’s got his hands on table saws, nail guns, chop saws and other power tools as the region’s only emergency shelter for homeless men undergoes a major makeover.

A medley of grants and charitable contributions helped pay for the project, including $130,000 from the Champlin Foundations, one of the state’s largest philanthropic organizations. But when it comes to elbow grease and technical expertise, Bacon is pretty much it.

Lincoln police make tough calls with simulator

September 21, 2013

LINCOLN – As the events at the Navy Yard in Washington, D.C., showed all too sadly on Monday, police officers must be prepared to take on a wide range of potentially life-threatening situations while considering the use of deadly force, and members of the local Police Department are no exception.

That is why Police Capt. Philip G. Gould was happy to show off the capabilities of a “shoot-don’t shoot,” police training simulator the department brought in on loan this week from the Rhode Island Interlocal Trust municipal insurance agency.

Fourth-quarter surge lifts Broncos past defending Super Bowl champion Islanders

September 21, 2013

BURRILLVILLE – About a year ago under the Gaudet Middle School football stadium's lights, host Middletown High didn't just whup Burrillville in a Division III contest, but embarrassed it with a 58-7 pasting.

Broncos' mentor Gennaro Ferraro reminded his current troops of that bushwhacking last September during practice sessions this past week.

Defense recuses Novans in shutout of Panthers

September 21, 2013

WOONSOCKET – The Woonsocket High coaching staff prides itself on instilling in its players a good, sound understanding of fundamental football.

That is, avoid silly mistakes that result in penalties, don't turn the ball over, don't “dance” with the pigskin but push it “north-south,” et cetera.

Another definition: take advantage of your opportunities.

Dion deadly as Clippers win rematch of Div. II semi-final over Broncos, 3-1

September 20, 2013

CUMBERLAND – Approximately 10 months ago, on a cold night at East Greenwich High’s Carcieri Field, Cumberland High played its collective heart out before suffering a 2-1 triple-overtime semifinal loss to eventual Division II state champion Burrillville.

The two Division II-North rivals went at it again in a tilt at Tucker Field on sun-splashed Friday afternoon, and Clippers’ head coach Stefanie Capone-Bello decided beforehand to remind her upperclassmen of that defeat.

Woonsocket restaurant’s ready to play in the big leagues

September 19, 2013

WOONSOCKET – The Gianakis family has been running successful restaurants from Florida to Worcester for years, but they might want to keep an eye on nanny-state politicians campaigning against generous food portions.

Some might think their roast beef sandwiches are too big to be legal.
Now, the proprietors of Major League Roast Beef & Wings have brought their super-size bites to 67 Cumberland St., a place where local officials urge food lovers to splurge with freedom-loving abandon.

McGair: Arrival of league play means high school football season is truly under way

September 19, 2013

Tolman High head coach Dave Caito calls it the start of a new season. In many ways, this weekend’s Rhode Island high school football schedule is just that for the local teams.

The time has come to put what has amounted to nearly five weeks of preseason camp in the rearview mirror. The 2013 campaign begins in earnest Friday night with the opening of league play, a time where teams battle it out for division championships and jockey for position in league standings, all fighting toward a common goal: to make it to that next – and final – “new” – season, a.k.a. the playoffs.
