Clippers stun Eagles in Winter Classic opener, 3-2

BURRILLVILLE — Cumberland High head coach Mark Andreozzi had a particular plan long before the start of its initial tilt of the Burrillville Winter Classic. He wanted to play all three of his goalkeepers in an effort to give them more experience.
Then again, he also hoped his club would show enough wherewithal to skate off the Levy Rink ice with a victory.
The Clippers did just that Monday night, rallying for a tally in all three periods and claiming an upset 3-2 triumph over Division I/Eccleston League representative Barrington.

WOONSOCKET- Arthur J. Mongeon, Jr., 71, of Main Street, Woonsocket, died Sunday, December 22, 2013 at his home.
Born in Grafton, Massachusetts, he was a son of the late Arthur J. Mongeon, Sr. and Blanche L. (LeBeau) Mongeon.
Arthur was employed by Plansee Tszit of Franklin, MA for 10 years before his retirement. He loved dancing, Autumnfest and going to Twin River.

City announces rubbish and recycling holiday pickup schedule

WOONSOCKET – On Wednesday January 1, in the observance of New Years Day the Woonsocket Material Recycle Facility will be closed. A complete listing of accepted items for free can be found on the City of Woonsocket’s Web site under Solid Waste.

Curbside pick-up for trash and recycling for January 1st, 2nd and 3rd will be delayed by one day.

Puck drops tonight on six-team Burrillville Hockey Winter Classic

BURRILLVILLE — The brainchild of Burrillville High head coach Steve Daigle and Levy Rink manager Chris Lacey, the will resume for the second consecutive season on Dec. 30, but Daigle calls it new and improved.
“Last year, we had Lincoln, Cumberland, Barrington and us, but now we've gone to a six-team tournament with the addition of North Smithfield and Medfield, Mass.,” he stated. “We wanted to add another Rhode Island team, and Medfield is a natural because the head coach is Toby Carlow, who graduated from Burrillville in 1995.

State fire marshal’s office investigating blaze

WOONSOCKET — A long-unused building at 754 Front St. was heavily damaged by fire Friday evening.

The fire was called in at about 9 p.m. Friday and took about 20 minutes for local firefighting personnel to contain, city Deputy Fire Chief Paul Russell said Saturday.

No injuries were reported.

The fire caused moderate to severe damage to the exterior of the building, and moderate damage to the interior, Russell said, adding that its cause is under investigation by the R.I. Fire Marshal’s Office.

Mount St. Charles bows to Fairfield Prep, 4-0, wraps up MSC holiday tournament with 1-2 record

WOONSOCKET — Mount St. Charles head coach Dave Belisle spent nearly a half hour speaking to his troops behind his closed locker room doors on Saturday afternoon.
It came of no surprise.
His Mounties had played rather well through the initial two 15-minute periods while battling Fairfield Prep of Connecticut; actually, they did the same for another nine minutes of the third before buckling, allowing the floodgates to open.

Novans down Tigers to win Holiday Classic hoop title

CUMBERLAND — In the end, Woonsocket High took advantage of five turnovers in the final 3:37 while mustering an 11-0 flurry in the span of 2:43 to roll to a 63-51 triumph over Tolman in the championship game of the 41st annual Boys & Girls Club of Cumberland/Lincoln Roadshow Holiday Classic on Friday night.
It turned out to be the Villa Novans’ team-leading eighth in the history of the oldest holiday tourney in Rhode Island. Had the Tigers eked it out, it would’ve been their sixth, which would have pushed them into a three-place tie with host Cumberland and Lincoln.

News mixed regarding PC freshmen; Friars close out non-conference slate at UMass

PROVIDENCE — One of the two suspended freshmen is back on Providence College’s campus. Forward Rodney “Rajay” Bullock was a full-fledged participant at Friday’s practice and will be part of the traveling party when the Friars head to Amherst to tango with nationally-ranked UMass on Saturday night.

Party host charged with neglect

WOONSOCKET – The police have filed a new charge of child neglect against a woman who hosted a party at her apartment that turned violent Sunday, they said.

Detective Jamie Paone said the charges against Pamela Perez are justified because her two minor daughters were left in a potentially dangerous situation by their mother, who was stabbed during the party.

He was an avid hunter and fishermen. He worked for the City of Woonsocket highway Division as a foreman for 20 years. He was a lifetime member of Italian Workingmen's Club.
