Middlebrooks doesn’t plan to stay with PawSox for long

June 26, 2013

PAWTUCKET – Will Middlebrooks spoke so softly that it felt as if the PawSox clubhouse had been transformed into a church.

The struggling third baseman didn’t attempt to mask his disappointment regarding a season that has hardly gone according to plan. For the moment, finding a silver lining in the fact that he was sent down is an impossible endeavor. It probably didn’t ease Middlebrooks’ frustration that Wednesday’s Red Sox-Rockies’ game was being featured on the clubhouse’s main television.

Mayor asks Chafee to pressure regulators on stalled Landmark sale

June 26, 2013

WOONSOCKET – Mayor Leo T. Fontaine is calling on Gov. Lincoln Chafee to untangle the “inexcusable” red tape that’s knotting up the sale of Landmark Medical Center, which marks five years in receivership this week.

In a sharply worded letter, Fontaine reminded the governor that he stood in the lobby of Landmark in 2011 and promised to do everything in his power to save the struggling community hospital.

Hernandez charged with murder

June 26, 2013

ATTLEBORO, Mass. (AP) — New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez was arrested Wednesday and charged with murder in the shooting death of a friend prosecutors say had angered the NFL player at a nightclub a few days earlier by talking to the wrong people.

Hernandez, 23, was taken from his North Attleborough home in handcuffs just over a week after Boston semi-pro football player Odin Lloyd's bullet-riddled body was found in an industrial park a mile away.

Stricker, Van Pelt capture CVS Caremark Charity Classic title in record-breaking fashion

June 25, 2013

BARRINGTON – Local legend Billy Andrade knew he and playing partner Bill Haas slowly had been creeping up the leaderboard at this 15th annual CVS Caremark Charity Classic on humid Tuesday, but never knew just how close they were to the front-runners, the duo of Steve Stricker and Bo Van Pelt.
When Haas knocked down a 10-foot birdie putt on the 452-yard, par-four 13th to move he and Andrade to 19-under, the board just behind the green indicated they had sliced the gap to a mere shot.

Chalk up yet another successful CVS tournament!

June 25, 2013

BARRINGTON – There’s always something so reassuring when an event such as the CVS Caremark Charity Classic concludes on this note, “See you next year.”
The words – echoed by Bristol native and co-host Billy Andrade shortly after the winning tandem of Steve Stricker and Bo Van Pelt took their bows on the 18th green at Rhode Island Country Club – helped in providing reassurance that the CVS event will feature a 16th installment.

Familiar faces await Middlebrooks in Pawtucket

June 25, 2013

PAWTUCKET – Will Middlebrooks does not need Pawtucket manager Gary DiSarcina or hitting coach Dave Joppie – two names who have previous player-coach relationships with the scuffling third baseman – to get in his face and flat-out tell the owner of a .192 big-league batting average this season where the areas of improvement lie.
“He knows what he needs to do,” said DiSarcina in anticipation of Middlebrooks’ arrival at McCoy Stadium on Wednesday, one day after getting informed by Boston skipper John Farrell that his season-long offensive funk had earned him a demotion to the Triple-A ranks.

Voter turnout better than expected

June 25, 2013
