Message of Hope

April 13, 2013

There is her faith, an anchor point that holds her safe in an ever-changing world, and there is also her large family – her brother Ralph, 89, the surviving member of her seven siblings, speaks with her often and her many nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, and even now adult pupils whom she taught for many years in area Catholic School.

Sister Hope, who turns 102 on May 19, is still in charge of her life as a sign in her room at Mount Saint Rita’s Health Centre professes.

Quick Decision: Woonsocket's Nordby suffers first MMA loss

April 13, 2013

LINCOLN – June 17, 2011 is one of the most memorable days of Kody Nordby’s life, and it’s not just because that was the day he graduated from Woonsocket High.
Rather, it’s what happened immediately after he received his diploma. Nordby hustled to the Holiday Inn in Mansfield, Mass. to make his amateur debut against Mark Johnson of Brighton, Mass. at the AFO’s (American Fighting Organization) Summer Brawl II.

Ortiz continues to pile up positive results for red-hot PawSox

April 13, 2013

PAWTUCKET — The story on Saturday afternoon wasn’t so much that the Pawtucket Red Sox assembled a mammoth sixth-inning rally to snag a 7-1 Game 1victory over the Rochester Red Wings at McCoy Stadium, but instead that David Ortiz played a key role in it.
The 37-year-old designated hitter, on a 20-game rehab stint with Pawtucket after suffering a right Achilles’ injury in a triumph over the Chicago White Sox last July 16, delivered a two-run ground single to right to help his club extend its lead to 4-1 – and continue Pawtucket’s finest-ever start to a season.

Wide range of gas prices around city, RI

April 13, 2013

___

WOONSOCKET – A drive around the city this week offered a discerning motorist a range of approximately eight cents on the cost of a gallon of gasoline depending upon where that driver decided to pull in.
And if the motorist had also checked gasoline prices elsewhere in the Rhode Island, that range could increase to .45 cents under a rough comparison of high to low station offerings.

Recent murder scene a proving ground for this young department

April 13, 2013

WOONSOCKET – The gray stucco house where the police found the battered body of a slain prostitute this week was more than just a crime scene.
It was a proving ground for the Woonsocket Police Department’s relatively inexperienced detective squad, more than half of whom had never investigated a homicide before.
“They want to show you just what kind of a police officer they’re capable of being,” says Police Chief Tom Carey. “They know a murder is the biggest type of investigation they’re ever going to be involved in.”

Cumberland's Constantino set to tackle Boston Marathon, break elusive three-hour mark

April 12, 2013

CUMBERLAND – For runners like Dave Constantino, the unicorn on the logo of the Boston Marathon has been fitting.
For nearly a decade at the hallowed 26.2-mile race, the 43-year-old Cumberland native has tried to track down his own personal unicorn – that is, break the 3-hour mark – but each time, he’s fallen short.
And he has come oh-so-close. Two years ago, his time was 3:04:46. The previous year, he ran a 3:07:40. And in 2006, his second trip to Boston, he turned in a 3:09:27.

Rainouts placing a damper on PawSox' pregame routine

April 12, 2013

PAWTUCKET – From a win-loss perspective, the Pawtucket Red Sox can’t ask for much more. Winners of six of seven games, it seems that Mother Nature, not the opposition, is the team’s toughest foe in the season’s early stages.
Friday’s postponement of Rochester-Pawtucket marks the second time in three days that the pitter-patter of raindrops has come into play for Gary DiSarcina’s ball club. This past Wednesday saw Pawtucket play two innings at Lehigh Valley before the game was halted in the second inning due to rain.
