WOONSOCKET â Social service agencies in the city are bracing for a rise in demand for assistance with food, shelter and other supports as federal sequester cuts begin taking a toll on extended unemployment compensation at the end of the month.
About 1,120 city residents receive the federal Emergency Unemployment Compensation benefits, which is about 14 percent of the total statewide, according to the state Department of Labor and Training. The average EUC check is $377 a month and will shrink by about $47.
PROVIDENCE â Through all the twists and turns on his basketball journey, Ricky Ledo never once lost sight of what he interpreted to be the brass ring.

BURRILLVILLE â Senior captain Zach LaFleur had just confessed to his ânewâ head coach, Peter Berthelette, that he needed his help with the bat after striking out twice in his final two at-bats Tuesday afternoon.
But when asked what Burrillville Highâs stellar 4-3 victory over Mount St. Charles in both teamsâ Division II-North season opener meant to him, LaFleur responded immediately and with feeling.
WOONSOCKET â Police say a woman whose body was found in her home Monday night was the victim of a homicide, but they arenât saying much else.
The victim was identified as 57-year-old Donna Pike, who lived on the top floor of 79 Rathbun St., a gray, three-story stucco behind Leeâs Convenience Store.
Saying they donât want to jeopardize an ongoing investigation, the police disclosed few details about how they believe Pike was murdered, the condition of the body or where in the apartment it was found.
CUMBERLAND- Stephen M. Petrosky Jr. , 93, formerly of Diamond Hill Road, passed away Thursday at Woonsocket Health and Rehabilitation Center, Woonsocket. He was married to the love of his life, the late Stella Zoubra on October 31, 1964 with whom he traveled the world and this country, which they enjoyed tremendously until her passing in 1995.
Born June 4, 1919 in Woonsocket, he was the fourth child and first son of Stephan and Efrosina Petrosky.
Stephen was a 1937 Franklin High School graduate where he received a medal for his essay on American History.
BLACKSTONE â A proposal to install ground-mounted photovoltaic solar panels at the former landfill on Chestnut Street will go before voters next month.
The plan is to enter into a lease agreement with a solar energy developer who will finance, operate, and maintain the facility while providing reductions in energy costs to the town.
WOONSOCKET â The School Committee has received a school administration recommended budget of $65,958,808 for 2013-2014 but whether it can break a committee impasse over that figure wonât be known until Wednesday.
The panel voted 2-2 on the recommended budget at its last meeting but was missing its Chairwoman Vimala Phongsavanh when the vote was taken.
WOONSOCKET â In a 9-0 Injury Fund romp at Smithfield on Saturday, Woonsocket High assembled quite the defensive display, and head coach John Marsella expected the same from his troops in the Division I-North season opener at Barry Field 48 hours later.
Unfortunately for the Villa Novans, they committed a whopping seven miscues on an unseasonably warm Monday afternoon and suffered a 6-5 loss to Cranston East before approximately 75 fans.

he was born in Woonsocket, a daughter of the late Philias and Fabiola (Drapeau) Caron. She was a loving and caring mother and grandmother and enjoyed sewing, cooking, and dancing.
NORTH SMITHFIELD- Charles R. DiCristoforo, 59, of Pound Hill Rd., died April 6, 2013 in the Hallworth House, Providence. He was the husband of Cynthia R. (Batura) DiCristoforo whom he married June 1, 1980.
Born in Woonsocket, he was the son of the late Nicholas and Marguerite (Ventry) DiCristoforo.
