NORTH SMITHFIELD – Work on the new Aldi supermarket at Dowling Village is wrapping up and Town Administrator Paulette Hamilton said on Friday plans are in the works for the store’s grand opening the morning of April 4.
Hamilton has been invited to the store’s ribbon-cutting ceremony that morning and noted there will be grand opening giveaways and other activities at the store.
“We are very excited about that; the only other Aldi's I am aware of in Rhode Island is in Providence,” she said of the Germany-based supermarket chain’s arrival in the Blackstone Valley.
BLACKSTONE — Never give up.
Those were the three words Cory Gaudet lived by every day; words that not only inspired him to forge during his 19-month battle with a terminal brain tumor, but also inspired the family members and friends who shared his short, but remarkable life.
PROVIDENCE – While his players hooted and hollered inside the dressing room, Burrillville High head coach Steve Daigle tried to explain how his crew – after dropping a tough 1-0 decision to Barrington in the first game of this best-of-three R.I. Division I Tournament championship set – managed a vastly different scenario on Saturday afternoon.
The hockey program at Mount St. Charles added another championship to its proud heritage on Saturday night after posting a 5-2 victory over La Salle Academy at Brown University's Meehan Auditorium. The victory completes a two-game sweep for the Mounties, who captured their 43rd state title.
PROVIDENCE – Lincoln High sophomore goalkeeper Chris Leclaire had been stationed in his own cage, well over 120 feet away, when his teammates on the Meehan Auditorium ice began a massive celebration.
Fractions of a second before, he had watched junior forward Griffin Hevey knock a routine skimmer from just inside the opponent's blue line at freshman netminder Austin Gemma.
CUMBERLAND – Students at Cumberland High School on Friday had Aydan Nyberg in their hearts – and on their sleeves.
Aydan, an eight-year-old student of the Cumberland Hill Elementary School, has been battling cancer since age 3 and has inspired the school to show support for him in a variety of ways, including wearing orange-colored clothing -- because orange is his favorite color -- and holding a number of fundraising projects.
PROVIDENCE — Whatever Mount St. Charles head coach Dave Belisle told his kids in the dressing room after the second period, it worked wonders.
Or is that an understatement?
The Mounties exploded for five unanswered tallies in the third – incredibly in a span of just 9:35 – to pummel La Salle Academy, 7-0, in this initial tilt of the best-of-three R.I. Championship Division series at Meehan Auditorium on Friday night.
