Robert W. Sanford
WOONSOCKET- Robert W. Sanford, 82, of Walnut Hill Rd. died Monday May 20, 2013, in the Oakland Grove Health Center, with his family by his side. He was the husband of Lorraine (Perry) Sanford.
Born in Providence, son of the late, Thomas J. and Grace M. (Farrell) Sanford.
Mr. Sanford was a United States Army Veteran serving in the Korean Conflict.
He worked in sales for 27 years for Cumberland Engineering, prior to retiring.
Marjorie P. Cummings
CUMBERLAND- Marjorie P. Cummings, 84, of Forestdale Drive in Cumberland, died on May 19 at Landmark Medical Center in Woonsocket, RI.
Born in Woonsocket, she was the daughter of the late Albert and Marjorie Place.
She attended Woonsocket High School and the University of Rhode Island and lived in Virginia and Connecticut for several years before settling down permanently in Rhode Island in 1963.
CRANSTON – Public school teachers from North Smithfield to Newport jammed into the auditorium at Cranston High School West Monday and for well over two hours unloaded a long list of grievances against Education Commissioner Deborah Gist with the stated intention of convincing the new state Board of Education to not renew her contract next month.
WOONSOCKET – After hearing residents voice concerns about enforcement of a related $100 fine and also general support for its health implications for children, the City Council on Monday granted first passage to a new ordinance banning smoking in city parks.
The five members present all voted to support passage of the measure, which will require a second approval to become law. Council President John Ward left for a personal commitment just prior to the vote but indicated he too favored the smoking ban, and City Councilman Albert G. Brien was not present due to illness.

NORTH SMITHFIELD - Thankfully for North Smithfield, Scituate’s comeback ran out of innings.
Owners of a 6-0 lead after three innings of play, the Northmen had to hold off the resilient Spartans over the last four frames before coming away with a 9-7 win on Monday afternoon in their Division II-North encounter on the Northmen’s campus.
PAWTUCKET – Jackie Bradley Jr. is no longer on the disabled list. However, the promising outfielder remains in a holding pattern.
At least for the foreseeable future, Bradley will be subjected to a schedule that the Red Sox put together in an effort to ease him back into full-time duty. He missed nearly two weeks earlier this month due to tendinitis in his right bicep, an injury that he first noticed during Pawtucket’s road trip to Rochester and Buffalo late last month.
WOONSOCKET – The latest actuarial data confirms that the financial condition of the city’s locally-administered pension plan for police and firefighters meets the state’s definition of “critical” because its assets have dipped below 60 percent of its liabilities to pensioners.
The data from USI Consulting means the city is no longer exempt from having to file a Funding Improvement Plan to the state Department of Revenue under a law passed last year by the General Assembly.
Lucien J. Malo
MANVILLE- Lucien J. Malo, 96, of Manville, died Sunday, May 19, 2013 in the Holiday Nursing Home. He was the husband of the late Yvonne (Sarreault) Malo.
Born in Manville, he was the son of the late Ernest J. and Aurore (Poisson) Malo. He lived in Manville most of his life.
Josephine Cardone
SMITHFIELD- Cardone, Josephine (Venditto) of Pleasant View Avenue, Greenville, died Friday, May 17, 2013. She was the devoted wife of Louis Cardone. They had been married for 63 years.
Born in Providence, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Theresa (Mezzini) Venditto. She had lived in Providence before moving to Smithfield.
William J. P. Brizard
PROVIDENCE - William J. P. Brizard, 58, of Wood Ave, died Thursday, May 9, in the Philip Hulitar Center. He was the son of the late Paul E. Brizard Sr. and the late Therese E. (Plante) Brizard.
Born on January 30, 1955, he served in the U.S. Air Force followed by a career in building and construction for several local contractors.
He enjoyed woodworking and building model cars.
