Trailer for Slatersville documentary released online

NORTH SMITHFIELD — The first trailer for the documentary “Slatersville: America’s First Mill Village” has been released online. The six-minute video represents a portion of the interviews filmed for the documentary, which is almost halfway through its production.
In one week the trailer has been viewed over 2,500 times on YouTube and the film’s director has received enthaustic responses from the public. This trailer will air on Rhode Island PBS.

Chicken fervor spreads in northern Rhode Island

WOONSOCKET — New laws that would permit property owners to keep chickens in residential areas for the first time have been proposed in both Woonsocket and North Smithfield.
If all plays out according to script, the City Council in Woonsocket and the Town Council in North Smithfield are on track to vote on the measures the same night, March 4.

WOONSOCKET- John Walter Nalewski, 83 of Woonsocket, RI passed away on February 13, 2013 at the Trinity Nursing Home.
He was born June 24, 1928 in Worcester MA., the youngest son of Maximillian and Josephine (Bogacki) Nalewski originally of Warsaw, Poland.
He is survived by and was the loving husband of Rosamond (DeRoche) Nalewski. They celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in Oct. 11, 2012

Claire Elaine Defond

WOONSOCKET- Claire Elaine Defond 90, of Garden St. died Wednesday at Landmark Medical Center. She was the wife of the late Edgar Renaud and Paul E. Defond.
Born in Woonsocket, she was a daughter of the late Albert and Germaine (Coupain) Bruneault.
Mrs. Defond was a molder for the Tupperware Co. for twenty three years before retiring in 1962.

BURRIVILLE- Charles F. Peacock, 65, of Douglas Turnpike, died January 24, 2013 in Landmark Medical Center. He was the husband of Virginia (Taillon) of Woonsocket.
Born in Boston, MA. son of the late, Fred and Virginia (Affanato) Peacock.
Charles worked as an auto mechanic for Sears & Roebucks for several years, prior to retiring.
He is also survived by one daughter Leanne and her husband Jason Garneau of Harrisville, R.I. and one son, Jon Charles Peacock of Woonsocket. Two sister, Jean Anthony, of Lynn, MA. and Karen Caprarella, of Taunton, MA. and six grandchildren.

WOONSOCKET- Tonianne (Hart) Southwick, 60, of Heroux Ave., died February 12, 2013 in the Philip Hulitar Inpatient Center, Providence. She was the wife of Mark S. Southwick whom she married October 3, 1997.
Born in Natick, MA, she was the daughter of the late Richard Hart and Barbara (Wheeler) Travis.
Mrs. Southwick worked as a mail clerk for Putnam Investments, Franklin, MA. She enjoyed travelling, going to the beach, fishing and rides on the motorcycle.

Woonsocket school board votes to send only 41 teacher layoff notices

WOONSOCKET – The School Committee on Wednesday voted unanimously to send layoff notices to 41 of the district’s 485 teachers, the number recommended by School Superintendent Giovanna Donoyan.
The move defied the recommendation of the state Budget Commission, the body in charge of balancing the city’s budget.
Donoyan told the committee she had received the Budget Commission request by telephone on Wednesday afternoon and did not have any additional information supporting it.

NORTH SMITHFIELD — Davies Tech came ridiculously close to achieving the impossible on Wednesday night.
Its host, North Smithfield High, had taken a 26-26 halftime stalemate into the locker room, then assembled a remarkable 14-0 flurry in the span of 6:07 to start the final stanza to snatch a 40-26 cushion.
Slowly, the gamey Patriots fought back, and actually held a 51-49 lead with just 8.8 ticks left in regulation – and with senior tri-captain Rosaliz Torres on the foul line.

CUMBERLAND- Adelard L. Caouette, 85, of Manville Hill Rd., died February 12, 2013 in St. Antoine Residence, No. Smithfield. He was the husband of Muriel L. (Milot) Caouette whom he married September 2, 1989 and he was the husband of the late Therese (Dancause) Caouette.
Born in Woonsocket, he was the son of the late Adelard and Roseanna (Gregoire) Caouette.

BLACKSTONE- Ada Clarke, 95, of Blackstone, MA died Tuesday, February 12, 2013 in Landmark Medical Center, Woonsocket, RI. She was the wife of the late Les Clarke.
She was born in Brooklyn, NY, daughter of the late Abraham and Celia (Schatz) Bergman.
Mrs. Clarke is survived by one son: Charles Clarke and his wife Charlene of Fayston, VT; and one sister: Hilda Verdura. She was predeceased by one daughter: Sharon Rappleyea and two siblings: Rose Kantor and Jacob Bergman.
