PawSox' Hamilton deals with injured wrist; Chris Martin's scoreless streak up to 24 innings

May 15, 2013

PAWTUCKET – When the manager mentions “small crack in his bone” in the same sentence as the player’s wrist, it’s easy to dwell on the worst-case scenario.
Gary DiSarcina, however, stated that the Pawtucket Red Sox are in no rush to place first baseman/outfielder Mark Hamilton on the disabled list. On the same day that saw Hamilton honored as International League Hitter of the Week, the 29-year-old jammed his wrist while attempting to make a play in left field.

Extended preseason pleases R.I. college basketball coaches

May 15, 2013

You take what you can get.
With that mantra in mind, the NCAA’s decree to lengthen college basketball’s preseason is a welcome development in a sport where the run-up to the regular season barrels down on coaches and players like a fastbreak. Earlier this month, the governing body of collegiate athletics ruled that men’s programs can begin practicing six weeks prior to their first game.
The 2013-14 season is set to tip-off on Nov. 8, meaning teams can begin laying the groundwork in earnest on Sept. 27.

Pit bulls bitten by bare-bones budget

May 15, 2013

WOONSOCKET – In a city flirting with bankruptcy, even stray dogs and cats are feeling the squeeze.

Animal Control Officer Doris Kay says her supply budget of $6,000 wasn’t enough to feed sheltered pets this year, but she’s facing a cut of some 16 percent in the weeks ahead.

While private donors are expected to help fill the food gap, there’s no relief in sight for another precious commodity at the animal control facility off Cumberland Street: space.

May 15, 2013

NORTH SMITHFIELD — North Smithfield made it official on a cold, rainy Wednesday afternoon -- the Northmen have repeated as Division II-North champions.
Backed by the spectacular four-hit pitching of junior ace Karissa Carlton and rallies in the first and fifth innings, the Northmen clinched the title outright by posting a 5-0 victory over neighboring foe Burrillville on the Northmen’s campus.

DiSarcina explains ‘manager’s decision’ to bench Iglesias

May 14, 2013

PAWTUCKET – Finally, a little clarification to “manager’s decision.”
For roughly seven minutes Tuesday, PawSox skipper Gary DiSarcina stood in his office and shed some light as to why shortstop Jose Iglesias was absent from the lineup for three consecutive days after getting removed in the top of the fifth inning of the May 4 contest.
It was fairly obvious that DiSarcina caught wind as to what some folks were passing off as the explanation to why Iglesias spent time on the bench. Such suspicions were way off base because they didn’t come straight from the horse’s mouth.

S.K. takes Div. I volleyball showdown with Mount

May 14, 2013

WOONSOCKET — Mount St. Charles head coach Josh D’Abate expected his crew to come out firing on all cylinders against visiting South Kingstown on Tuesday night.
After all, the Rebels had entered the important clash at 9-1, their lone loss occurring against Division I-South leader Coventry in only the third tilt of the season. He anticipated his Mounties, leading the North section, to want to prove its wherewithal against one of Rhode Island’s best.
