NORTH SMITHFIELD: Germaine A. Bessette, 92, passed January 31st. She was the wife of the late George A. Bessette.
Born in Attleboro, MA, a daughter of the late Jean Baptiste and Exilia (Paul) Salvas.
She dedicated her life to her family.

WOONSOCKET- Leona Thibault, 94, of Woonsocket, formerly of Lewiston, Maine died Thursday morning at Trinity Health & Rehabilitation Center. She was the wife of the late Laurier Thibault.
Born and raised in Central Falls, she was a daughter of the late Arthur and Evelyn (Boulanger) Patenaude.
Following her marriage she resided in Lewiston, ME for over 60 years prior to relocating to the Woonsocket area several years ago.
Mrs. Thibault was employed at Hillcrest Poultry Company and Raytheon Corporation prior to her retirement.

SLATERSVILLE- June D. (Allard) Gurka, 84, of Orchard Street, No. Smithfield, died January 31, 2013 in Landmark Medical Center in Woonsocket. She was the wife of the late Walter P. Gurka, whom she married June 6, 1947.
Born in No. Smithfield, she was the daughter of the late Arthur and Dora (Allaire) Allard.
June worked for thirty years as an assembler for the Amprex Electronic Co. retiring in 1990. She enjoyed knitting and crocheting and was an avid BINGO player.

BLACKSTONE- Kenneth W. Robinson, 92, of Blackstone, MA died Thursday, January 31, 2013 at his home. He was the husband of the late Mary (Lesperance) Robinson.
He was born in Blackstone, MA, son of the late Roland and Anna (Bradley) Robinson.
Mr. Robinson was a World War II Seabees Veteran and served in the Pacific Theater on the island of Peleliu. He was owner and operator of Robinson's Equipment Corporation and he was a member of the Historical Truck Society.

Schools receive $1.8M in grants

PROVIDENCE – Five schools in Woonsocket and Smithfield have won $1.8 million in grants to improve student reading skills in partnership with The Teaching Studio, a nationally recognized group of consulting teachers based at The Learning Community charter school.
The grants, from the Rhode Island Foundation and the Kellogg Foundation, will provide training and other resources for over 200 teachers who will reach about 6,000 public school students, the Learning Community announced Thursday.

Blackstone introduces its new library director

BLACKSTONE — Millville's loss is Blackstone's gain.
Lisa G. Cheever, Millville's library director since 2005, is the new director of the Blackstone Public Library.
Cheever began her new duties in Blackstone on Jan. 14 and was formally introduced to the Board of Selectmen on Jan. 22.
"We have been without a library director for the past seven months and we're extremely happy to have someone who can immediately begin taking on the duties and responsibilities of library director," Mary Lou Branchaud, chairwoman of the Library Board of Trustees, said in introducing Cheever to the board.

Woonsocket's Soukhamthath eager to build off 2012 success

WOONSOCKET — Andre Soukhamthath knows the coming-out party from 2012 is over.
A new year is under way for the 24-year-old Woonsocket bantamweight, and while his first full year as a pro fighter brought him a 3-0 record -- a submission win followed by two knockouts -- Soukhamthath wants to do bigger and better things this year.

CUMBERLAND — It certainly looked as if improved Tolman High, which rolled into Cumberland’s Wellness Center late Wednesday afternoon with five victories in its previous seven tilts, would make it six-of-eight.
The Tigers also seemed destined to eke out a two- or three-point triumph over the Clippers, but head coach Gary Reedy’s crew had other plans.

BERLIN, VT.- Albina Ann Beauley, 80, Passed away peacefully Tuesday, January 29th on her Birthday at Berlin Health and Rehab after a long battle with Parkinson's.
She was born January 29, 1933 to the late Genevieve and Theodore Morell. She was predeceased by two husbands Ernest Alfred Charette and George Beauley both from Woonsocket, RI.
She is survived by a sister Judy Cateau, and two Brothers Norman Morell and Theodore Morell Jr all of Woonsocket, RI and several nieces and nephews.
