Three qualify for ballot to contest Dist. 49 seat

WOONSOCKET – Three of the four candidates who filed papers to run for the vacant House District 49 seat secured a spot on the ballot Tuesday.
Estelle Corriveau, manager of the Board of Canvassers, said Michael A. Morin, Mark L. Chenot and Douglas T. Brown had filed the requisite number of valid voter signatures to run in the Democratic primary, Jan. 21.

Dr. Stuart Gitlow, a former two-time contender for the House District 49 seat, apparently fell one signature short of the 50 required.

WOONSOCKET- W. Pieter Byhouwer, 82, of Woonsocket, died Sunday, December 22, 2013 in Overlook Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, Pascoag. He was the husband of Glenda E. (Metcalf) Byhouwer, whom he married May 31, 1987.
Born in Rotterdam, Holland, he was the son of the late Jan T.P. and Evelyn (Oliver) Bijhouwer.

GLOCESTER- Steger, Byron C., 84 of Chepachet and Wakefield passed away Monday, December 23, 2013. He was the beloved husband of Phyllis (Chase) Steger, to whom we was married for 61 years.
He was born in Dallas, TX, the youngest son of the late Phillip P. and Dorothy (Blount) Steger.

Trio arrested after party goes bad

WOONSOCKET — A 36-year-old woman was stabbed in the leg after a party at her apartment somehow erupted into a chaotic, violent melee early Sunday, police said.

Pamela Perez is also one of three people facing charges after the incident, though no one has yet been arrested in connection with stabbing her, said Detective Capt. Edward J. Lee Jr.

“That’s still under investigation,” said Lee. “She gave us conflicting information about who might have done this to her.”

Clippers even hoop record, keep Toll Gate winless

CUMBERLAND — It wasn’t even close to being an attractive contest, not with a combined 28 turnovers and 27 personal fouls.
Still, head coach Gary Reedy refused to complain after his Cumberland High boys registered what he called a satisfying 53-40 non-league triumph over Toll Gate at The Wellness Center on Monday night.

Friars plan to take advantage of semester break from classes; PC freshmen suspended for season

PROVIDENCE – During the winter semester break, the assumption is that LaDontae Henton and the rest of the Providence College basketball players are going to have a lot of downtime. After all, exams are done and classes don’t resume on the Smith Hill campus until Jan. 21.

Yet as Ed Cooley gladly points out, the Friars will not be on autopilot.

HARRISVILLE- O'BRIEN, LAWRENCE E., 67, of Harrisville and formerly of Pawtucket, passed away Sunday, December 22, 2013, a son of the late James and Cecile (LaPlante) O'Brien, and brother of the late Roger O'Brien.
Larry leaves his loving wife, Kathleen, his sisters, Jocelyn and Claudia O'Brien of Pawtucket, brothers Byron O'Brien of Pawtucket and Gary O'Brien of Niantic Connecticut.

Born in Uxbridge, MA, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Agnes (Bigelow) Rivet.

WOONSOCKET- Timothy J. Wood, 38, of Woonsocket died Thursday December 19. He was the husband of Holly (Wojcicki) Wood.
He was born in Providence, a son of George and Janet (Melone) Wood of Pascoag.
Mr. Wood was a Construction Superintendent for the Pulte Construction Company in Hopkinton, MA. He was a member of the Air National Guard. Tim was a loving husband and father, and an avid sailor.

WOONSOCKET- Henry J. Joly Sr. of St. Barnabe St. died Saturday at Trinity Health and Rehabilitation Center.
Born in Woonsocket, he was a son of the late Albert and Yvette (Henry) Joly Sr.
Henry was a machinist for the Draper Corporation for twenty years, and then for Tech Industries, retiring after twelve years. He was a Navy Veteran of the Korean War. Henry was an avid fisherman and enjoyed going to Twin River Casino.
