MacBeth demands Studio 38 subpoena

PROVIDENCE – Cumberland Rep. Karen MacBeth (D-Dist. 52, Cumberland), a member of the House Government Oversight Committee that is currently investigating the 38 Studios debacle, says she wants the panel to issue subpoenas to learn how the Economic Development Corporation’s (EDC) loan guarantee program went so wrong.

“We can follow the money a lot more closely than we are able to with the documents we have,” MacBeth told The Times Friday. “Who was on the payroll? People made lots of money on this business, I believe, fully knowing that it wasn’t going to make it.

WOONSOCKET- Laurette C. "Memere" Allard, 88, of Woonsocket died Wednesday morning at the Ballou Home. She was the wife of the late Woonsocket Police Officer Gerard R. Allard who passed away in 1997.
Born in Woonsocket, she was a daughter of the late Joseph and Salome (Bessette) Leclerc. She was a lifelong resident of Woonsocket.
Mrs. Allard was employed at Mansurel Worsted, L'Hospice St. Antoine and Leos Bakery in Woonsocket.

BELLINGHAM- Lucien E. L'Etoile, 89, of Bellingham, MA passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 12, 2013 at the Kindred Transitional Care & Rehabilitation of Franklin. He was the beloved husband of the late Fabiola G. (Auclair) L'Etoile.
Born in Manville, RI on May 25, 1924, he was the son of the late Joseph and Laura (Meunier) L'Etoile.

High school football season begins this weekend

Woonsocket High head coach Carnell Henderson believes it, and so does Shea mentor Dino Campopiano.
Both understand that those teams that make up the state’s Division I is still superior in talent, but that the league in which they compete is the toughest from top to bottom.

Really, who can argue? This season, the Villa Novans will face in their II-A bracket the likes of Coventry, Chariho, Johnston and Mount Hope, while Campopiano’s Raiders will have the task of battling defending league champion Cumberland, St. Raphael, North Kingstown, Central and Rogers in II-B.

In R.I., hardship cases, landing waivers can be tough

WOONSOCKET — “I’m doing this for the betterment of these two kids,” declares George Nasuti.

It is the intent of the longtime Woonsocket High athletic director to exhaust all options in the hopes of obtaining a hardship waiver for two currently enrolled student-athletes. Due to their circumstances, these Villa Novans – for identity purposes, they are referred to as a boys’ soccer player and a baseball player – do not meet the Rhode Island Interscholastic League’s basic eligibility principles.

WOON (1240 AM) hits airwaves for another high school football season

WOONSOCKET – Once again, WOON (1240 AM) has staked a claim to become the on-airwaves destination for Rhode Island high school football.

Beginning with Friday’s non-league game between Woonsocket and East Providence, WOON will feature a 10-game package. All of the games will air live and feature the voice talents of Lou Mandeville, the station’s sports director, and longtime high school and college football coach Mike Watters.

EAST PROVIDENCE- George E. Perron, 65 of East Providence, died Monday at the Rhode Island Hospital. He is the husband of Katie (Jackson) Perron.
Born in Woonsocket, he was the son of the late Gerard and Adele (Lavendier) Perron.
George was employed as a Manager/Supervisor at the School House Candy Company in Pawtucket until 2007.

BREAKING: TWO SHOT IN WOONSOCKET

WOONSOCKET -- Police confirmed early Thursday morning that at least two people were shot during what appears to be a home invasion on West Park Place in the city. The incident occurred at about 2 a.m. Thursday morning. The two victims were transported to the hospital. The extend of their injuries are unknown. The Call will have updates on this breaking news story as they become available.
