Diossa: ‘The sky’s the limit’ for Central Falls' future

CENTRAL FALLS – Declaring that “the sky’s the limit in this amazing square-mile city,” Mayor James Diossa launched his bid to be mayor for another three years on Saturday.
Diossa, who took his first oath of office on New Year’s Day after winning a special election, grasped the helm of the struggling city as it tried to free itself from the shoals of a difficult bankruptcy, under the storm cloud of his predecessor, former mayor Charles Moreau, pleading guilty to federal corruption charges and preparing to go to prison.

North Smithfield council to weigh Dowling open space purchase Monday

NORTH SMITHFIELD – A long-standing question as to what will happen to a still-undeveloped parcel of land bordering the Dowling Village commercial development off Eddie Dowling Highway could be answered on Monday with the help of a $400,000 open space grant from the Department of Environmental Management.
The Town Council will consider the acquisition of a 40-acre parcel of land at Dowling Village using the state grant and another $525,000 in available local open space preservation funding when it meets Monday evening in the Kendall-Dean School cafeteria.

Woonsocket's election season to kick off Monday

WOONSOCKET – Local voters will begin to learn the lineup for this year’s city election for mayor and City Council as the period for formal declaration of candidacy opens at the Board of Canvassers office in City Hall on Monday.
Declarations for mayor and City Council will be accepted at the office from Monday until 4 p.m. through 4 p.m. on Aug. 27, according to Board of Canvassers Manager Estelle D. Corriveau.

Barnes named top RI school superintendent

GLOCESTER — Dr. Michael Barnes, school superintendent of the Foster-Glocester Regional School system, is the 2014 Rhode Island Superintendent of the Year. His selection by the Rhode Island School Superintendents' Association (RISSA) was announced at its general membership meeting on Wednesday.
The award recognizes outstanding achievement in school district leadership, his dedication to the education of all children, his commitment to the community, and his service to RISSA.

For Ryan Kalish, embarking on the comeback trail has featured an eerily similar narrative.

There’s the surgery aspect, which Kalish has down pat by now. Since diving for a ball in center field at McCoy Stadium on April 21, 2011 – a play the 25-year-old dubs “a stroke of bad luck” – the onetime Red Sox outfield prospect has been subjected to one corrective procedure after another. Yearning to feel like his old self has proven a tough road to hoe, his left shoulder and neck never quite getting back in sync.

SUN CITY CENTER, FLORIDA- Warren R. Goodwin, 89, of Sun City Center, Florida, formerly of North Smithfield, RI passed away on July 2, 2013.
He is survived by his wife Lois of 66 years. He will be sadly missed by his 5 children, Bradford of Sun City Center, FL., Brian, Warren, Jr. and Scott all of North Smithfield, and Lori Goodwin of West Palm Beach, FL. He was a grandfather of 8 and a great grandfather of five and also leaves several nieces and nephews.

BLACKSTONE- Fred B. Erdman, Jr. 80, of Blackstone MA, passed away surrounded by his family on August 10, 2013, at his residence.
He was the husband of the late Suzanne (Sechko) Erdman.
He was born in Brooklyn, NY, a son of the late Fred & Jeanette (Seiders) Erdman, Sr.
He worked for Lifespan Inc. and also for the Kennedy Donovan Center as a group home manager as well as the Roche Brothers Grocery Market as a manager. He was a Blackstone resident for many years, formerly living in North Carolina and New York.

CUMBERLAND- Frederick J. Soltys, 88, a long time resident of Cumberland, RI, passed away on Sunday, August 11th 2013 at the Woonsocket Nursing & Rehabilitation Center. He was the husband of the late Alice M. (Jackson) Soltys.
Born on July 4, 1925 in Providence, RI, he was the son of the late John & Veronica (Walczak) Soltys and the youngest Brother of Rudolph and Alphonse Soltys, both now deceased.
