More sales, less service: Expansion of liquor store Sunday hours is latest threat to church attendance

Liquor stores in Rhode Island get an additional two hours of selling time this morning, and this latest commercial encroachment has some members of the clergy wondering if Sunday is losing the reverence as a religious day it has long held in these parts.

The change approved by the General Assembly in its recent session and signed a week ago by Gov. Lincoln Chafee allows liquor stores to move up their opening times from noon to 10 a.m., a change some hope will give the businesses a sales advantage over their Massachusetts competitors.

Lincoln LL routs Cranston Western in R.I. opener

CRANSTON — If the Lincoln All-Stars had any concerns during their R.I. Little League Major Division (11-12) Tournament opener on Saturday afternoon, they didn't relate to their collective performance but the weather conditions, which slowly deteriorated.
As the skies overhead grew dark and thunder resounding in the background, righty reliever Dave Bordieri put the finishing touches on Cranston Western, the crushed victim of relentless Lincoln's 13-0 “mercy rule” triumph at Michael P. Varrato Field.

Bodington, Cumberland bring heat in 11-1 victory over Charlton, Mass. in Eastern Regionals opener

BRISTOL, Conn. — Jocelyn Bodington delivered one of the finest outings of her young softball career, Alex Pina knocked in five runs to lead a potent attack at the plate, and the Cumberland All-Stars made their presence felt in a very big way on Friday afternoon in the Eastern Regional tournament.
The three-time Major Division state champions kicked off their New England pool play by parlaying Bodington’s dominant pitching and an 11-hit assault into an 11-1 win over Charlton, Mass. that went all six innings at Breen Field on the Bart Giamatti Complex.

CUMBERLAND- Sylvia B. Forte, 80, passed away Thursday in the Miriam Hospital. She was the beloved wife of Antonio A. Forte. The had been married for the past 60 years.
Born in Woonsocket she was the daughter of the late Russell W. and Beatrice (Caron) Champagne. She resided in Cumberland for the past 54 years.
She was employed by the former Drolet Hardware Co., Pawtucket for 13 years retiring in 1995.

LADY LAKE, FLORIDA- Ronald (Ron) Ouellette, 70, of Florida, formerly of Woonsocket passed away on June 6, 2013, at The Villages Hospital.
Ron was born on Jan 18, 1943 in Woonsocket. He was the son of the late Aldeo (Leo) and Florence (Hantis) Ouellette also of Woonsocket. Ron graduated from Mount St. Charles in 1961.

Six-alarm fire guts Uxbridge building

UXBRIDGE – An estimated 20 residents of six occupied apartments at 32 South Main St. were left homeless Thursday after a fire swept through the back section of the 3-story brick commercial building and caused extensive damage before it could be extinguished.
Everyone in the building at the time was reported evacuated safely but the day’s high temperatures around 95 degrees resulted in three firefighters being hospitalized for heat exhaustion, according to Fire Chief William Kessler.

Navigant takes over first place, beats Upper Deck

LINCOLN — Navigant Post 85 of Woonsocket utilized a superlative mound performance by southpaw Aaron Catarina, not to mention a monumental two-run double by former Woonsocket High star Andreas Brackett in an eight-run fourth frame, to register a solid 9-4 victory over rival Upper Deck Post 86/14 at Chet Nichols Memorial Field on Thursday night.
Catarina (2-1) earned the triumph after yielding only one hit in his four-inning stint. He did issues eight walks, but also struck out a pair.

LINCOLN — On Tuesday afternoon, Lincoln All-Stars’ manager Matt Netto still didn’t know which opponent his team would face in the opening round of the upcoming state Little League Major Division (11-12) Tournament.
Because Cranston Western upset winners’ bracket titleist Johnston, 11-6, Monday night, those two District I representatives faced off in a winner-take-all championship game on Wednesday night at Cranston Western’s home site.
