NORTH SMITHFIELD â The signs of town and school officials playing poker with the local education budget grew stronger this week as the Town Council tendered a settlement offer to school officials, who in turn rejected the proposal.
The move left a wide-ranging threat of cuts looming for department employees and programs affecting graduating seniors that by all accounts no one really wants to see enacted as a solution to the School Departmentâs projected $470,000 deficit for the current fiscal year.
It almost never fails.
Every now again, the budgetary scalpel cuts off funding for sports at the middle school and high school levels.
Naturally, such slicing prompts strong reaction from everyone in town â concerned parents to coaches to the real victims affected by this slashing of essential monetary support, the adolescent student-athletes.

WOONSOCKET â Police arrested a Providence teenager whose alleged drug-drops in East Woonsocket so irked neighbors that one family asked the mayor to intervene this week.
Angel Peguero, 18, of 1030 Atwells Ave., was arrested Thursday on four counts of possession of crack cocaine with the intent to deliver, maintaining a narcotics nuisance, distribution of a controlled substance, distributing a controlled substance near a school, and possession of a controlled substance.
