Reported kidnapping a hoax

WOONSOCKET – Local police, the FBI and the state police swung into action Tuesday afternoon after a reported child abduction, but it didn’t take them long to figure out it was all a hoax.
“We’re happy to report there was not an abduction at all,” Detective Sgt. Matt Ryan announced at a press conference about two hours later. “The story was fabricated by our witness.”
The investigation began about 12:30 p.m. after a juvenile reported seeing four men kidnap a young girl on Vose Street. Police wouldn’t say whether the witness was a boy or a girl.

WOONSOCKET - Andre J. Kelleter, 75, of Woonsocket, died Monday, July 7, 2014 in the Philip Hulitar Inpatient Center, Providence. He was the husband of Gloria M. (Piette) Kelleter. Born in Woonsocket, he was the son of the late Julian and Christianna (Courchesne) Kelleter.
Andre was a truck driver for Branch Motors, Holmes Transportation and Ryder, retiring in 2003. He was a communicant of St. Joseph's Church. Andre was a member of the Teamsters Union Local 170. He enjoyed traveling and spending time with his wife, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

WOONSOCKET - Mildred A. Geter, 62, of Main St. died Friday July 4, 2014 in Landmark Medical Center, with her family by her side.
Born , in Newberry, South Carolina, daughter of the late Malcolm and Lela Mae (Harmon) Jeter.
She was an active member of St. James Baptist Church.
She worked as a CNA at Landmark Medical Center and Rhode Island Hospital, also for Beverage World Liquor Store, Miller Electric and Rosecraft.
Mildred, enjoyed being with her family and friends, cooking, baking and dancing.

Cumberland American punches ticket to District IV finals

SMITHFIELD — The Cumberland American All-Stars came into this R.I. Little League District IV Tournament winners’ bracket final with consecutive “mercy-rule” triumphs over rival Cumberland National and Burrillville.

In the latter tilt, skipper Dave Belisle’s crew clobbered nine extra-base hits and 17 in all to deliver a 19-0 pasting, that following a 10-0 victory over CNLL.

The key question on Monday night was this: Did Smithfield have enough offensive firepower to outduel CALL?

For an inning, the answer was yes. After that? Nope.

CUMBERLAND – Scott Miller may never have gotten into charity ultra-distance cycling if not for a letter he received in the mail way back in the late 1990s.

“It was from the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, and the letter asked me to get involved in the event,” noted Miller, a 57-year-old business owner from Cumberland. “It said, 'We'll train you to do a 100-mile ride, and you'll be a member of a 'Team in Training.' That caught my eye, so I looked into it.

Police arrest mom, find baby alone in apartment

WOONSOCKET – A 10-month-old girl with signs of physical abuse was found alone in a battered women’s safe house Sunday after police detained the mother on Hamlet Avenue wearing nothing on top but a bra.
Police said Ebony Evans, 33, was arrested on charges of child neglect and second-degree child abuse.

WOONSOCKET - William J. Cummings, 81, of Meadow Rd., died July 4, 2014 in St. Antoine Residence, No. Smithfield. Born in Woonsocket, he was the son of the late William H. and Elizabeth C. (Hurley) Cummings.
He is survived by three siblings, Edward R. Cummings of No. Smithfield, Elizabeth H. Cummings of Woonsocket and John A. Cummings of No. Smithfield. He was the brother of the late Mary Cummings.

WOONSOCKET - Robert D. Benoit, 67, of Clinton St., died July 5, 2014 in Trinity Health & Rehabilitation Center, Woonsocket. He was the husband of Jean L. (Lataille) Benoit. Born in Woonsocket, he was the son of the late George and Anita (Gauthier) Benoit.
Robert was a member of the Woonsocket Elks’ Club.

FAIRFAX, VIRGINIA - Claire I. Auger passed away peacefully on July 4, 2014 at the age of 89, with her family by her side.
Claire was born in Manville Rhode Island August 2, 1924, the youngest of six children to George and Leona ( Berard) Auger. Claire graduated from St. Xavier's Academy in Providence R.I., and earned her Bachelor's Degree from Rhode Island College of Education in 1945. She also earned a Masters' Degree in Education in 1970 from Seton Hall University in South Orange, NJ.
