Pleau’s getaway driver seeks to withdraw guilty plea, citing judicial error

WOONSOCKET – In September 2013, Jose Anibal Santiago pled guilty to charges stemming from his role as the getaway driver in a fatal robbery outside an East Woonsocket bank that triggered a two-year-long battle over the death penalty.
Now he wants to change his mind.
Through his lawyer, Santiago, 37, has filed papers with the 1st U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Boston seeking to withdraw his guilty plea. He contends U.S. District Judge William E. Smith in Providence failed to properly inform him of the full implications of his plea before he was sentenced.

BLACKSTONE, MA - Paula Staples Burrell, 67, formerly of Blackstone, MA, died on July 24, 2014 at her home in East Lempster, NH. She was the daughter of the late George and Pauline Staples of Blackstone.
Paula is survived by her five children: her two sons Kenneth and Keith Cranshaw, and her three daughters Patricia Prudhomme, Pauline and Penny Cranshaw; as well as, fourteen grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

RENO, NV - Thelma F. (Bailey) Steffancci, 94, of Round Robin Lane, Reno and formerly of Woonsocket, died July 25, 2014 at home. She was the wife of the late Charles P. Steffancci. Born in Lincoln, she was the daughter of the late Leon A. and J. Inez (Pratt) Bailey.

Eight-inning outburst sends Cumberland American to New England finals

BRISTOL, Conn. – Buoyed by a nine-run uprising in the top of the eighth inning, Cumberland American stormed past Falmouth, Maine, 13-4, in the semifinals of the New England Little League Regional tournament at Breen Field.

CALL now advances to Saturday night’s championship game and will face either top-seed Fairfield (Conn.) American or No. 4 Barnstable (Mass.) American. Cumberland routed Barnstable in pool play while falling to Fairfield thanks to a walk-off home run in the bottom of the sixth.

Saturday’s New England finale will air live on ESPN beginning at 7 p.m.

Woody Allen spends Thursday morning filming latest movie in Pawtucket

Woody Allen directs a scene for his upcoming movie on Main St. in downtown Pawtucket Thursday on morning. Main St. and High St. were closed for a time while several scenes were filmed for the new movie, as yet untitled, before Allen and company moved to 207 Wickenden St. in Providence for filming shot the Coffee Exchange.

Judge says Ray Tempest Jr. can use evidence of witness manipulation by police in bid to overturn 1992 murder conviction

PROVIDENCE – Over the objections of state prosecutors, a Superior Court judge ruled Wednesday that Raymond D. “Beaver” Tempest Jr. may argue that he was wrongfully convicted of murder on the strength of false testimony resulting from the unlawful manipulation of witnesses by Woonsocket police officers.

Cumberland American concludes pool play on winning note

BRISTOL, Conn.  –  Perhaps 30 minutes after the Cumberland American All-Stars had sustained a 5-3 walk-off loss to Fairfield American of Connecticut on Tuesday night, manager Dave Belisle conducted a meeting in the team dorm.

In essence, he told his bunch to keep their heads up, that they had played well in the defeat and to believe in themselves as they always did.

PawSox once again in the mix for playoff spot

PAWTUCKET – Manager Kevin Boles doesn’t pretend to be unaware of the fact that his Pawtucket Red Sox are now in the throes of a pennant race, something that in recent years has been an annual staple of August baseball around these parts.

“There’s a buzz and definitely aware what’s going on. They want to accomplish some special things,” Boles said. “We’re here to develop winning ballplayers.”

BLACKSTONE - Lucille C. (St. Jean) Ryan, 81, of Blackstone died August 5th at Milford Regional Medical Center. She was the wife of the late Michael Ryan who died in 2005.
She was born in Woonsocket, RI; daughter of the late Leo and Antoinette (DeCelles) St. Jean. She was raised in Woonsocket and attended St. Claire's High School.
Mrs. Ryan and her late husband owned & operated the former Ryan's Variety store on Main St. in Blackstone. She had also been employed at various times by U.S. Rubber, Tech Industries and S.M.O.C.
