Scrimmages mark next phase of H.S. preseason camp

Starting Thursday, a series of chess matches will break out on high school football fields across the state.
By definition, scrimmages are akin to shifting pieces around on a square board. Some moves work while others produce less-than-desirable results. Regardless of what transpires during these low-pressure yet highly valuable tussles on the gridiron, coaches understand that the time has come to embark on the next phase of preseason camp following a period of steadily bringing the unit along.

Sister says Officer Cahill strangled her

WOONSOCKET — A 23-year-old city policeman who has been suspended without pay and charged with felony assault allegedly choked his 9-year-old sister, according to reports released by the Woonsocket Police Department Wednesday.
Two sisters were at their father’s house when the 9-year-old went downstairs where Patrick Cahill was watching television and asked if she could go outside, according to the report.

Gemma charges Cicilline with voter fraud

NASONVILLE- Theresa M. Hebert 88, of Ironmine Rd., Nasonville, died Monday at Landmark Medical Center. She was the wife of Conrad A. Hebert.
Born in Blackstone, she was a daughter of the late Delphis and Angelina (Lebrun) Ferron.
Theresa was a credit manager for the former Woonsocket Hospital for twenty five years before retiring. After her retirement, she and her husband lived in Florida for eight years before moving back to RI.

BURRILLVILLE- Dennis R. Taillon, 58, died suddenly, Sunday, August 19, 2012 in Bridgewater, VT. He was the husband of Sandra L. (Flinton) Taillon, whom he was married to for 28 years.
They lived in Pascoag for many years and also spent time at their property in Bridgewater, VT.
Born in Woonsocket, he was the son of the late Lionel and Dorothy (Daggett) Taillon.
Dennis worked as a Welder for Electric Boat in Quonset for more than 27 years. He was an active member of Pascoag Fire Department, Hose Company #2 since 1990.

Then there’s the term that Angels manager Mike Scioscia used in describing the heightened state of urgency Chris Iannetta finds himself in after missing 2 1/2 months with a broken bone in his right hand.
“You can study and simulate stuff all you want, but when you get behind the plate, you’re like that jockey on a saddle,” Scioscia explained prior to Tuesday’s Red Sox-Angels game at Fenway Park. “That’s the feeling you need and that’s where Chris needs the time in order to come together.”

City cop arrested for assault of girl, 9

WOONSOCKET — A city policeman was arrested by his own department on felony assault charges Tuesday for striking a 9-year-old girl, police said.
Officer Patrick Cahill, 23, was taken into custody on a complaint filed by the girl’s mother, said Jamie Paone, a spokeswoman for the Woonsocket Police Department.
She said the girl is closely related to Cahill, but she declined to elaborate, saying the police are trying to protect the privacy of such a young person.
