WOONSOCKET — The city has teamed up with a private startup company from Grafton, Mass., in an effort to increase recycling in the downtown business district.
Michael Debroisse, the city's solid waste superintendent, said the city has replaced a half-dozen traditional garbage cans between Market and Depot squares with specialized recycling bins provided by Go Green Solutions.
The bins, which cost the city nothing, are designed with three color-coded deposit slots — green for paper, blue for cans and bottles, black for non-recyclable waste.
WOONSOCKET — Tears streamed down the man's cheeks as he stood on the railing of the Hamlet Avenue Bridge, thinking about the end.
Patrolman Kevin Sanford saw the dog leash looped around the man's neck. The hasp was clipped on so that if he jumped the leash would cinch around the man's neck from his body weight. The other end of the leash was tied around the lower rung of the bridge railing.
Claudette L. Lambert
BELLINGHAM- Claudette L. Lambert, 72, of Bellingham, MA passed away on Sunday, April 3, 2011 at home.
Born in Manchester, NH on March 11, 1939, she was the daughter of Flavien J. and Alberta D. (Dubois) Lambert.
She was the loving sister of David Lambert of Costa Mesa, CA, Gerald Lambert and his wife Roxanne of Texas, Dennis Lambert and his wife Linda of Foster, RI, Doris Cibor of North Smithfield, RI, Yolande Hesketh and her husband Frederick of Bloomfield, CT; and her cherished 11 nieces and nephews and 32 great nieces and nephews.
Antonio Dias
WOONSOCKET- Antonio Dias, 97, of Warwick St., died Sunday, April 3, 2011 in St. Antoine Residence, with his family by his bedside. He was the husband of the late Maria (Gaspar) Dias, with whom he emigrated from Portugal to the U.S. in 1961. He was the son of the late Manuel and Maria (do Carmo) Dias.
Born in Sao Paulo, Brazil, he and his family returned to Portugal when he was a young child.
Lillian E. Therien
WOONSOCKET- Lillian E. (Cournoyer) Therien 85, formerly of Woonsocket and Jensen Beach, FL, died Monday at The Holiday in Lincoln. She was the wife of the late Armand F. Therien.
Mrs. Therien was born in Woonsocket, a daughter of the late Albert and Emma (Giguere) Cournoyer.
She worked as a meat wrapper for Stop and Shop Supermarkets for many years. Lillian was an avid card player and enjoyed fishing with her husband.
Marc C. Lauzon
WOONSOCKET- Marc C. Lauzon, 63, of Woonsocket, passed away peacefully on Monday, April 4, 2011 at the Westerly Hospital with his family by his side. He was the beloved husband for 43 years of Suzanne H. (Boucher) Lauzon.
JoAnn Wood
WOONSOCKET- JoAnn (Paquette) Wood, of Woonsocket passed away on March 29, 2011. She was the beloved wife of James Wood for 28 years.
Born in Woonsocket she was the daughter of Josephine (Norek) Paquette of Woonsocket & the late Joseph Paquette.
Besides her husband & mother, she leaves a daughter Nancy Bailey & husband Scott of No. Smithfield, Her granddaughters Christy & Alyssa, grandsons Jaylyn & Neil. Her brothers Thomas, John & wife Lisa Paquette of Woonsocket, Mark & wife Rose Paquette of Chepachet, also many nieces & nephews.

For the past two years, race director Kerri Stenovitch has had no problem deciding on a rightful beneficiary for the Phantom Farms Planting Footprints 5K road race. Considering that the 3.1-mile event takes place at the popular Cumberland apple orchard, most of the proceeds went to the R.I. Fruit Growers Association.
Stenovitch, a former star runner for St. Raphael Academy in the early 1990s, has decided on a new cause for this Sunday’s race.
And like the previous one, this one truly made sense.
Ed Hunt knows that all three subdivisions in this year’s Division I circuit are going to be tough, but not as difficult as the battles awaiting his Lincoln team in the Division I-North ranks.
“There are no weak sisters in our division,” the veteran coach said before his Lions’ workout on Monday afternoon. “I think we have the toughest division from top to bottom, whereas most of the other divisions, they’re balanced this year, but they still probably have four good teams.”
MILLVILLE — Police say excessive speed was a factor in the crash of a motor vehicle that left a 20-year-old local man dead Sunday.
Christopher Mitrano of 9 Allard Court was pronounced dead at the scene about 1 a.m. He was the sole occupant of the vehicle, said Police Clerk Blaine Sheppard.
Sheppard said Mitrano's 2002 Camry swerved off Chestnut Hill Road and slammed into “multiple trees” with such force the car was severed.
