Catherine A. Jackson
NORTH SMITHFIELD- Catherine A. (Swanton) Jackson, 82, died August 7, 2012 in her home surrounded by her loving family. She was the wife of the late Albert E. Jackson, Sr. whom she married May 2, 1953.
Born in Boston, MA, she was the daughter of the late Patrick and Margaret (Mogan) Swanton.
Pauline T. Chaharyn
WOONSOCKET- Pauline T. (Masse) Chaharyn, 63, of Highland St., died Saturday August 4, 2012 in Landmark Medical Center with her family by her side. She was the wife of Alan T. Chaharyn.
Born in Woonsocket, daughter of the late Paul and Martha (Kotzeneauer) Masse.
Prior to retiring she worked for the Woonsocket School Department for several years.
Pauline also was a former Girl Scout Leader in Woonsocket.
She enjoyed spending time with her family, gardening and watching birds, especially her favorite, the Hummingbird. She also was an avid traveler.
PAWTUCKET â€“ On his first official day as a member of the Pawtucket Red Sox, Danny Valencia found himself out of Wednesdayâ€™s starting lineup. His placement under the â€śextra hittersâ€ť portion of the lineup card only furthers the argument that itâ€™s going to be tough for the 27-year-old to carve out regular playing time.
Valencia is a third baseman by trade, a position where heâ€™s logged 2,281 innings in 262 big-league games. Coming over from the Minnesota Twins via trade on Sunday, Valencia joins a PawSox ballclub that's pretty well stocked at the hot corner.
WOONSOCKET â€“ Budget constraints have forced the school district into consolidation mode, but Schools Supt. Giovanna Donoyan is looking for volunteers who are ready to rebuild a vibrant public school system.
The superintendent announced the effort to seat a five-year Strategic Planning Committee this week to set academic goals for the future of the school district.
NORTH SMITHFIELD â€” A 44-year-old resident was arrested Wednesday afternoon on domestic-violence charges involving him holding a gun to the head of his elderly mother.
Brian R. Mellor, of 1350 Pound Hill Rd., was arrested after his 71-year-old mother, Carol, who lives with him, went to the police station to report that he had put a gun to her head and threatened to kill her at around 9 a.m. Wednesday.
During a search of the Pound Hill Road home, police confiscated 21 weapons including numerous firearms and a crossbow, Chief Steven E. Reynolds said at an evening press conference.
Jeannette F. Guertin
WOONSOCKET- Jeannette F. Guertin, 84, of Fifth Ave., Woonsocket, died Tuesday at Oakland Grove Health Care Center. She was the loving wife of Francis X. Guertin. They were married on July 31, 1966.
Born in Woonsocket, she was a daughter of the late Arthur and Florida (Laird) Lefebvre. She resided in Woonsocket for most of her life and lived in Blackstone for several years in her youth.
Anthony P. Anzalone, Jr.
BELLINGHAM- Anthony P. Anzalone, Jr., 73, of Bellingham, MA passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, August 7, 2012 with his loving family by his side. He was the beloved husband for 50 years of Irene L. (Falcone) Anzalone.
Born in Boston, MA on August 28, 1938, he was the son of the late Anthony P. and Josephine (Zappula), Sr.
WOONSOCKET â€” Less than 48 hours after stunning the McCarthy Field crowds by earning the R.I. American Legion Baseball Tournament championship as the eighth seed, Navigant Post 85 co-coaches Buster Perrault and Jim Gauthier chose to conduct a low-key, elective practice at Renaud Field on Tuesday afternoon.
The skippers did so to ready their troops for the Northeast Regional American Legion Tournament, a double-elimination event slated to begin Thursday at The Ballpark in Old Orchard Beach, Me.

PROVIDENCE â€“ A Woonsocket man was sentenced to 50 years in prison Tuesday for a 2007 rape that had police stumped until his DNA was collected over three years later, after he committed an unrelated crime.
Jason Nickerson, 31, was sentenced to 60 years in all, with 50 to serve on each of four counts of first-degree sexual assault and the balance suspended, the attorney generalâ€™s office said.
