WOONSOCKET â€” The state-appointed Budget Commission has hired Smithfield Town Solicitor Edmund L. Alves Jr. as its staff legal counsel.
Alves will be paid $175 per hour, minus a 15 percent discount the state has imposed on many of its employees. Though the budget commission was seated by the state, Woonsocket is responsible for Alvesâ€™ fees.

PAWTUCKET â€” For Scott Podsednik, the left groin strain he suffered 11 days ago couldnâ€™t have come at a worse time.
Podsednik, who had returned to the big leagues after a yearâ€™s absence, was batting .387 in 19 games with the Boston Red Sox and giving them a much- needed boost in the outfield after they lost the likes of Jacoby Ellsbury, Carl Crawford, Darnell McDonald, Cody Ross, and Ryan Sweeney to injuries.
CUMBERLAND â€” Not quite a year ago, Bruce Stanford and his son, Jordan, video-recorded the first game of the Cumberland American Little League Major Division All-Starsâ€™ first foray into the Little League World Series in Williamsport.

Born in Pascoag, she was the daughter of the late Oliver and Blanche (Trinque) Bulris.
PAWTUCKET â€” The newest member of the Pawtucket Red Sox played a major role in snapping the teamâ€™s third-longest losing streak in club history on Wednesday night at McCoy Stadium.
Starting pitcher Zach Stewart, who was acquired by the Boston Red Sox in Sundayâ€™s trade with the Chicago White Sox for Kevin Youkilis, turned in a splendid outing to help the PawSox defeat the Charlotte Knights, 5-1, and grab their first victory after nine straight losses.
PAWTUCKET â€” Mauro Gomez earned a spot on the International League all-star team last season, the third straight year he earned a midseason honor.
Ryan Lavarnway was a Carolina League all-star in 2010, and Pedro Ciriaco picked up his last minor-league all-star honor three years ago in the Southern League.

WOONSOCKET â€” The Budget Commission last night awarded a Denver, Colo.-based company a contract to build a new $36.6 million wastewater treatment plant designed to comply with more restrictive anti-pollution regulations.
CH2M Hill was one of three bidders for the project, including United Water and Veolia Inc., the current operator of the regional plant on Cumberland Hill Road.
