NORTH SMITHFIELD — Dr. Zaheer Shah is both a physician and a lawyer, but he was never trained to work with one hand tied behind his back.
Unfortunately, when patients refuse a complete physical because they can’t afford the diagnostics, it is like working handcuffed. And it’s an all-too-common occurrence because so many individuals have inadequate health care insurance — if they have any at all.
LINCOLN — Free food for blood was the deal during a blood drive at Lincoln Mall that day, but Maxine Renning wasn’t allowed to donate — she was running a slight temperature.
Renning, then 18, had such a hankering for a slice of pizza she did the next best thing. She offered up a cheek swab, providing a sample of her DNA to a bone marrow registry.
And today a woman in Chicago is alive because of it.

EAST PROVIDENCE — East Providence had the spirit and emotion of Senior Night, an adrenaline rush from an energetic section of students rooting them on in the bleachers, and a six-game win streak on its side in Tuesday’s showdown at home with Mount St. Charles.
