BURRILLVILLE- PALMIERI, Alberta L., 84, of Wallum Lake Road, died Wednesday, February 22, 2012. She was the wife of Ralph E. Palmieri. They were married for 56 years.
Born in Burrillville, daughter of the late Albert W. and Elsie L. (Congdon) Wilcox.
Alberta was a past president of the VFW Post 1023 Ladies Auxiliary.
She is survived by daughters, Rose Shaw of Pascoag and Alberta Hips of Bennetsville, SC, 4 grandsons and 1 great granddaughter; siblings, Lester Wilcox of Green Valley, AZ & Grace Brey of Eastern, MD. She was the sister of the late Carolyn Sherman.

HUDSON, FL- Loretta (Lori) Champeau, 70, of Hudson, FL, formerly of Mapleville, RI died January 30, 2012 at Regional Medical Center Bayonet Point, Hudson, FL.
She was the beloved wife of Lionel Champeau for the past 53 years.
Born in Woonsocket, the daughter of the late Pearl and Frederick Archambault.
Loretta worked at General Motors in Framingham, MA for many years, retiring in 1991 when the plant closed.

Chafee hints at withdrawing meal tax hike if revenue strong enough

WOONSOCKET — Speaking at a business development forum Thursday, Gov. Lincoln Chafee hinted that he might withdraw his proposed hike in the meals and beverage tax if new revenue forecasts due in May are high enough.
“We’re hoping with those new revenue estimates we can work on the meals and beverage tax,” Chafee said. “Let’s hope those May numbers continue the positive trend they’re on.”

UXBRIDGE- John S. Gomes Jr., 88, of 115 King St. died Thurs. Feb. 23 at home after an illness.
He is survived by his wife of 37 years Donna J. (St. Denis) Gomes; his 2 children Marion L. Graves and her husband Jeffrey of Harrisville, RI and Steven J. and his wife Kelly Gomes of Uxbridge; 2 grandchildren Allyson Graves and Joshua Graves with another baby Gomes on the way in August; cousins Laura Burgo and Joey Cravino; and several nephews and nieces.

The unknown variable pertaining to the 30-team boys’ basketball open state tournament is a mystery no more.
On Thursday the Interscholastic League released where the corresponding regions will be heading for the Round of 16 should they safely navigate out of this weekend’s first-round slate of games. The North region will dock at CCRI-Warwick next Tuesday; the South region will play out at Bryant University next Tuesday; the East region heads to Bryant University next Wednesday; the West region is set for next Wednesday at CCRI-Warwick.

Pension reform sparks police, fire retirements

WOONSOCKET — Continuing concern over pension reform and the city’s shaky financial condition are helping fuel one of the biggest retirement waves among police and firefighters since 2009.
Fourteen workers have tendered retirement papers since December — six police officers and eight firefighters, according to figures supplied by the city’s personnel department.
Nearly 50 additional public safety employees, including 18 police officers and 26 firefighters, are currently eligible to retire with at least minimum basic pension benefits.

He was the husband of Beverly A. (Dunham) McMullin and the late Audrey A. (Willhauck) McMullin.
Born in Newton, MA on November 3, 1932, he was the son of the late Philip W. and Barbara (Connolly) McMullin.

UXBRIDGE- Celeste I. (Filion) Cardin, 47, died Tues. Feb. 21, 2012 in Brigham & Womens Hospital, Boston surrounded by her loving family. She was the wife of David M. Cardin.
Mrs. Cardin was a Para Professional for 11 years in the Uxbridge Public School System working with special needs students and young adults at both Whitin Middle School and the Independence Project. Celeste had previously worked at Fr. Marot CYO Center in Woonsocket, RI.

Expect big hikes in sewer fees

WOONSOCKET — The much-bemoaned financial burden of upgrading the wastewater treatment plant will begin hitting home in the form of steep hikes in sewer fees as soon as the next bills go out in May.
The average homeower’s bill of $69.23 per quarter will rise by some 12 percent, effective immediately, followed by a series of increases in each of the next four calendar years of 11, 11, 5 and 5 percent, respectively, under an ordinance adopted Monday by the City Council.
