Kathleen P. Lappin

PROVIDENCE- Mrs. Kathleen P. Lappin, R.N. 85, of Providence and formerly of Oakland, died Jan. 18, 2011 at the Hallworth House, Providence. She was the wife of the late William J. Lappin, former state Representative.
Born in Oakland, a daughter of the late Edward and Mary (Crook) Byrne.
Kathleen was a graduate of the St. Joseph's Hospital School of Nursing. She worked many years for Dr. Ernest J. Smith in Oakland. She also worked at and retired from Zambarano Hospital.

WOONSOCKET- Rita I. Mann, 83, formerly of Chateau Clare, entered into Eternal Life Thursday at The Friendly Home. She was the wife of the late Melvin M. Mann.
Born in Woonsocket, she was a daughter of the late Leandre and Yvonne (Lefrancois) L'Esperance. She was a lifelong resident of the city.
Mrs. Mann was employed at the Social Department Store for many years and was also an AVON representative.

Townies too much for Villa Novans

WOONSOCKET — High school basketball coaches have a lot in common with teachers who send their students through rigorous courses like physics or chemistry. Hoop mentors must stand on the sidelines, trying to explain the finer points of their sport, while players try to absorb those lessons in the midst of competition.
East Providence’s Alex Butler and Woonsocket’s Kyle Ivey-Jones did their best to educate their players on Wednesday night when the Townies visited the Villa Novans for a battle between two sub-.500 Division I teams.

Northmen's Kiernan set to break goal-scoring record

NORTH SMITHFIELD — Kayla Kiernan has built up an impressive resume during her fantastic high school hockey career at North Smithfield High.
A state champion and the state’s goal-scoring leader as a freshman. A First-Team All-State pick as a junior, a Second-Team All-Stater as a sophomore. A three-time First-Team All-Division selection. And the list goes on.
And just when you thought she couldn’t top what she’s done, Kiernan has an golden opportunity to tack on two more marvelous feats to her resume -- the state’s all-time goal-scoring leader and first-ever 100-goal scorer.

Charette carries talents from hardwood to track

PROVIDENCE – Minutes after finishing his 55-meter race on Monday afternoon, Jessie Charette sat down on the track and took off his racing flats. The Woonsocket High senior placed third, edged by teammate and overall winner Jalen Evans and runner-up Butch Giguere of Ponaganset at the line in a Northern Division tri-meet at the Providence Athletic Facility.
But despite coming up short at the finish in his quest for individual glory, Charette was still smiling. His trademark grin was evident.

Car crash kills city men

DOUGLAS, Mass. — Two Woonsocket men were killed when their car crashed broadside into an oncoming tractor trailer on Route 16 about 4:30 a.m. Tuesday, the town's police department said.
The victims were identified as Marco Vargos, 40, and his passenger, Hugo Leonel Garcia-Deleon, 27, both of 108 Morin Heights Blvd.

WOONSOCKET- Dorothy J. Carr 78, of Patton Rd. died Sunday at Oakland Grove Health Care Center. She was the wife of the late James H. Carr.
Mrs. Carr was born in Central Falls, a daughter of the late Joseph and Helen (Warchal) Klucznik.
She worked as a cashier and clerk for Stop and Shop Supermarkets for many years before retiring over seven years ago. Dorothy enjoyed playing cards at the Senior Center.

WOONSOCKET- David A. Emidy, 63, of Bourassa Ave., died January 15, 2011 at home. He was the husband of Mary Jane (Shaw) Emidy.
Born in Woonsocket, he was the son of the late Raymond E. and Mildred M. (Gnecco) Emidy.

WOONSOCKET- Anna Krasowska, 90, of Woonsocket, died Saturday, January 15, 2011 at home.
Born in Woonsocket, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Aniela (Wantroba) Krasowski. She lived in Woonsocket all of her life.
Miss Krasowska worked as a Switchboard Operator at Sears and Roebuck in Woonsocket for over 40 years when she retired in 1985. She was a communicant of Our Saviour Polish National Church in Woonsocket.
