Novans chase Hendricken track dynasty

The hockey season concluded less than a week ago and to no one's surprise it was Mount St. Charles that was celebrating on the ice with another state championship. Except for a four-year dry spell from 2003-07, that's the way it has been since the 1977-78 season for the Mounties, who have racked up 42 state titles in their storied history.
In boys' swimming, Bishop Hendricken has won every team title since 1989-90, a total of 22 straight crowns.

NORTH SMITHFIELD- Meredith "Merry" A. (Jensen) Brodeur, 65, passed away after complications of a brief illness on Thursday, March 24, 2011. She was the daughter of the late Sumner E. and Doris (Chase) Jensen.
She was the loving wife of Laurent "Larry" Brodeur and mother to Laura Melo, Lynn Bussaglia and Jeffrey Brodeur. She was Grammie to Brian, Brandon, Brianna and Bryce Bussaglia and Amanda and Ashlee Brodeur. She was dearly loved by her two brothers and sisters-in law, Kenneth R. and Marilyn J. Jensen and Richard E. and Jo-Ann Jensen.

SLATERSVILLE- Raymond C. Church 64, of Main St. Slatersville, died Thursday at the RI Veteran's Hospital. He was the husband of Carol (DeVaudreuil) Church.
Born in Pawtucket a son of Mary (Sherman) Church of Providence and the late Chester Church, he moved to North Smithfield in 1976.

SEBASTIAN, FL- Harvey C. Young, "Harv" (also affectionately known as "Uncle Harv") 60, of Sebastian, FL, died March 11, 2011 at VNA Hospice, Vero Beach, FL.
He was born in Providence, RI, a son of Flora B. Young of Spring Hill, FL and the late Howard C. Young. He spent his younger years mostly in Pascoag, RI moving to Sebastian in 2005.

MSC spikers primed for move to Div. I

EAST PROVIDENCE — After three straight years of bringing home the hardware in Division II and posting a combined 56-2 overall mark during that span, Mount St. Charles Academy has moved up to the state’s top division this season.
Head coach Josh D’Abate is looking forward to the challenge where his squad will compete against the likes of defending state champion Bishop Hendricken and other powers such as North and South Kingstown.

Unified Basketball comes to Ponaganset

GLOCESTER — Beth Keeling has had a strong involvement in Ponaganset High athletics, particularly over the last decade.
Keeling is the school’s “unofficial” photographer at various sporting events and also has been an avid supporter, including following the stellar football and track & field careers of her three sons, Mike, Jacob and Nick.
Her three sons have since graduated, but the retired special education teacher has still found a way to stay connected with her “kids” on the athletic spectrum at Ponaganset.

WOONSOCKET- Donald E. Fagnant 80, of Park Ave. died March 19, 2011 at Mt. St. Francis Health Care Center. He was the husband of Marian (Rapacz) Fagnant.
Mr Fagnant was born in Woonsocket a son of the late Arthur and Edna (Massart) Fagnant.
He was a pipe shop supervisor for the Electric Boat Division of General Dynamics for twenty four years before retiring seventeen years ago. He enjoyed golfing, fishing, and bowling.
