WOONSOCKET â€” An apparent accident at the former St. Francis House apartment building at 167 Blackstone St. claimed the life of a relative of the buildingâ€™s owner Tuesday afternoon.
Alan Fernandes, 49, of Woonsocket, stepped on a glass skylight in the floor of the buildingâ€™s attic and fell four flights down the open stairwell below to the buildingâ€™s basement, according to Woonsocket Police Lt. Eugene Jalette.
Fernandes, brother of the buildingâ€™s owner Gary Fernandes, was transported by city rescue personnel to Landmark Medical Center where he later died, according to Jalette.
Lionel J. Mercier
PALM BAY, FL.- Lionel J. Mercier 87, formerly of Woonsocket, passed away Saturday April 16, 2011 at the Holmes Regional Medical Center, Melbourne FL.
He was born in Blackstone, a son of the late Arthur and Gloriana (Beaudoin) Mercier.
He was a WWII veteran and a member of the American Legion, both in Palm Bay and in Woonsocket Post 85.
Charlotte K. Hvizdos
DUNEDIN, FL- Charlotte K. Hvizdos Charlotte K. (Pisarczyk) Hvizdos, 97, of Dunedin, FL and formerly of No. Smithfield, passed away peacefully on Friday at the home of her daughter Charlotte A. Sagan, she was the loving wife of the late Louis A. Hvizdos.
Born Oct. 30, 1913 in Blackstone, MA., she was the daughter of the late Joseph & Sofia (Strycharz) Pisarczyk, she resided in No. Smithfield for many years before moving to Florida. Charlotte was a Beautician for the former McCarthy's Dept. Store when it was located on Main St.
CHEPACHET- Nora Byrne, 95, resident of Chepachet died June 19, 2011 at the Village at Waterman Lake in Greenville RI.
Wife of the late Brendan Byrne who died Jan. 20, 2000.
She was born in Putnum CT. on Oct. 30 1915, daughter to the late Amedeo & Robelinda (Meotti) Zamagni.
Nora was a receptionist for 20 years for the former Putnum Herzl Finishing Co, retiring in 1978; previously she worked as a mender for the former Putnum Woolen Mill for 20 years. A resident of Chepachet since 1964, previously living in Putnum where she lived most of her life.
Kenneth L. Briggs
BELLINGHAM- Kenneth L. Briggs, 49, of Bellingham, passed away on Tuesday, June 14, 2011 at Milford Regional Medical Center after being stricken at home.
He was the beloved husband for 25 years of Patricia L. (DeBonise) Briggs and the loving father of Robert H., Michaelia E. and Kelleyanne M. Briggs all of Bellingham.
Born in Framingham on August 28, 1961, he was the son of Harry B. and Janet B. (McGuire) Briggs of Marlborough.
CHATHAM, MA- Alice (Lemoine) Stifter, a loving Catholic devoted to faith, family and friends, died June 19 peacefully and surrounded by family in her home after a short struggle with cancer. She was 79.
Alice grew up in Woonsocket, R.I, graduating from St. Clare High School. She studied opera in New York City, performing with a Rhode Island opera company. She was the lead in a "Madame Butterfly" production at that time.
She married Francis Stifter in November 1959 in St. Charles Church, Woonsocket.
Franklin D. Dickie
BLACKSTONE Franklin D. Dickie, 68, of Blackstone passed away on Wednesday, June 15, 2011 at home. He was the beloved husband of the late Dolores A. (Desjarlais) Dickie.
Born in Fullerton, CA, he was the son of the late Franklin T. and Mildred L. (Reizes) Dickie.
Norman E. Blais
WOONSOCKET- Norman E. Blais 62, of 100 Front St. died Saturday at the Boston VA Hospital. He was the husband of Jeannette (LeBlanc) Blais.
Born in Woonsocket he was a son of Therese (Ricard) Blais of N. Smithfield and the late Normand Blais.
He was a stocker at Walmart in Woonsocket for five years before becoming disabled in 2008, he previously worked for General Motors for over nine years. He served in the US Navy during the Vietnam War. Norman was an avid fisherman.
Rose Marie "Blanche" Martin
WOONSOCKET- Rose Marie "Blanche" (Senecal) Martin, 77, passed away peacefully on June 15th, at the Woonsocket Health & Rehabilitation Center with her family by her side.
Born April 21, 1934 in Woonsocket, she was the daughter of the late Albert & Rose (Roy) Senecal, she resided in Woonsocket most of her life.
Catherine D. Shields
WOONSOCKET- Catherine D. (Currier) Shields, 96, formerly of Woonsocket, died Saturday, June 18, 2001 in the Ballou Home, Woonsocket. She was the wife of the late James J. Shields.
Born in Woonsocket, she was the daughter of the late William M. and Annie M. (Nolan) Currier.
Mrs. Shields was a Homemaker and a member and past president of the Trinity Club and a president of the Rosary Crusade of St. Charles Church.
She is survived her friends Normand Guerard and his wife Michelle of Blackstone, MA.
