Muriel B. Lafond

BLACKSTONE- Muriel B. Lafond, 67, of Blackstone, loving and devoted wife of Normand R. Lafond, died suddenly and unexpectedly on Friday, November 26, 2010. She and Normand recently celebrated their 49th wedding anniversary. She was the daughter of the late J. Almanzor and Annette (Berube) Pelletier .

Woonsocket earns return trip to Super Bowl

WOOD RIVER JUNCTION — Chariho High got off to a very good start, but Woonsocket High pulled off a fantastic finish.
The Villa Novans scored a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns and saw their lights-out defense force the Chargers to turn the ball over on their final four series in a 21-7 semifinal-round victory on Tuesday night on the Chargers’ turf that put them back into the Division II Super Bowl.

Moses Brown too much for Lincoln, 21-0

PROVIDENCE — During the league season last month, Lincoln High had its way with Moses Brown and handed its Division III foe its first loss of the fall.
Let’s just say the Quakers took that defeat personal.
In the more-important rematch between the two squads — a semifinal tilt on Tuesday night — Moses Brown returned the favor with a convincing 21-0 blanking of the Lions at Brown University’s Berylson Field.

Northmen fall to EWG in 2 OTs

WEST GREENWICH — The North Smithfield football threw a lot of punches and had the champ on the ropes.
But just when it looked like the champ was done, they found a way.
The Northmen threw – literally and figureatively – everything they had at Exeter-West Greenwich, but couldn’t close out the defending Division IV champions in overtime, coming up one yard short in the second OT as North Smithfield fell 44-38 in the D-IV semifinals Tuesday night.

Homeless shelter pushed to capacity

WOONSOCKET — For the last seven years, Senior Pastor Gene Giguere and his fellow members of the Harvest Community Church at 60 North Main Street have been able to follow their Christian faith and help someone in need.
The church has provided shelter to a number of homeless men who might otherwise have spent long, cold nights outdoors during the winter. The church’s second-floor Sanctuary Ministry shelter opens each Nov. 1 and runs until March.

CUMBERLAND- Pauline Bruneau-O'Hara (Marcotte), 75, of 238 Ann St. died Monday in the Miriam Hospital, Providence. She was the beloved wife of Wilfred O'Hara Sr.
Born in Bellingham she was the daughter of the late Antonio and Aurore (Barrette) Marcotte. She resided in Cumberland for the past 36 years.
Mrs. O'Hara was an avid bingo player.

TAUNTON, MA- Cecile M. Mailloux, 69, of Fall River, formerly of Woonsocket, died Thursday at Morton Hospital in Taunton, MA. She was the wife of Alphonse Mailloux.
Born in Woonsocket, she was a daughter of the late Leo and Antonia (Bourget) Cote. She was a graduate of St. Clare high school class of 1958.
Upon her graduation she entered the Sisters of the Religious of Jesus and Mary and was known in Religious life as Mother Mary of the Immaculate Heart.
Following her 16 years in religious vocation she was a teacher in the Fall River public schools for many years.

Aldor J. Girard, Jr.

WOONSOCKET Aldor J. Girard, Jr., 90, of Jillson Ave., died Nov. 27, 2010 at Oakland Grove Health Center. He was the beloved husband of 64 years to Marie Rose (Phaneuf) Girard.
Born April 4, 1920 in Woonsocket, a son of the late Aldor J. Girard, Sr. and Laura (Simon) Girard. He proudly served overseas as a combat veteran in WWII and received a Purple Heart for wounds received in service to his country.
Aldor worked for National Fabric, then Providence Steel for many years before retiring in 1982.

PASCOAG- Nicholas R. "Nick" Silva, 23, resident of Pascoag, passed away Nov. 28, 2010 at Day Kimball Hospital in CT.
Born in Providence, son of Francisco and Kelley (O'Rourke) Silva.
Nick recently graduated from Allegheny College in PA. where he earned his Bachelors Degree and he was a star football player, a graduate of Burrillville High School Class of 2005. He enjoyed wrestling, golfing, and volunteered helping under privilege children.

NORTH SMITHFIELD- Francesco J. "Frank" Conte, 96, of North Smithfield, passed away peacefully on Friday, November 26, 2010 at Saint Antoine Residence with family by his side. He was the beloved husband of the late Mary E. (Scungio) Conte.
Born in Woonsocket, RI on February 19, 1914, he was the son of the late Charles and Maria (Greco) Conte.
