Emery died in 2010, but the annual event benefitting disabled veterans from the Brockton VA Hospital and other residences was on again at Auger’s home on Saturday thanks to the help of Emery’s wife, Liz; Auger’s daughter, Nicole Auger-Gassett; and a battalion of volunteers from area veteran organizations.

Tom Mezzanotte, RIIL executive director, brought what he felt was a serious matter to the attention of the R.I. Principals’ Committee on Athletics during last week’s meeting. Upon holding discussions with the medical community and the RIIL’s attorney, Mezzanotte recommended to the PCOA that the practice of high schools lending equipment cease immediately.

The sandwich saints

August 23, 2014

A pot simmers on the stove inside the kitchen of the two-story colonial when Brother Alan Aubin is summoned from his chair at the dinner table by the unusually shrill clang of an old-fashioned doorbell.

A slight man with a dollop of silvery hair lopped across his forehead, Aubin opens the back door and quietly acknowledges the visitor, handing the stocky man in blue jeans a couple of sandwiches and a canned drink. It’s a transaction that lasts just a few seconds from start to finish, and it takes place with few words, uttered in hushed tones.
