State to schools: Get house in order

WOONSOCKET — The state Department of Revenue has laid down a Wednesday deadline for the School Department to submit a plan to clarify its current rate of spending on personnel after the unexpected discovery of a deficit of $2.2 to $2.7 million in last year’s school budget.
If the inquiry points to the incursion of yet another deficit at the end of the current fiscal year, DOR might appoint a fiscal overseer to monitor the city’s expenses, state Revenue Director Rosemary Booth Gallogly said.

Man struck, killed on Main Street

WOONSOCKET — An 80-year-old city man, crossing Main Street after a visit to City Hall, suffered fatal injuries when he was struck by a car Monday morning.
Police Lt. Eugene Jalette said the elderly man was struck while he was in the crosswalk in front of historic Harris Hall at about 11:20 a.m.
“The victim was transported by rescue to Rhode Island Hospital and was pronounced dead at 1:10 p.m. today,” Jalette said.
