Military service source of pride for area veterans

May 8, 2011

We’ve been publishing the Military Page since Jan. 31. I didn’t know how it would play with our readers, figuring maybe we could get some early interest before things waned. After three months, the pictures of veterans keep coming in. Family members are dropping off treasured photos each week, often including a note telling us how much pride they take in the service of their siblings, most of whom are deceased but still very alive in the memories of the family they left behind.

Woonsocket High takes bio-tech leap

May 8, 2011

WOONSOCKET — In an era when the only talk about education seems to focus on ways to cut back, science teacher Claire Laquerre has somehow found a way to improve the science classroom facilities used by students at the high school.
Laquerre and a team of willing volunteers, both staff and students, yesterday unveiled a new bio-technology lab that they admit was put together with a little begging and a little borrowing.
The in-house renovation project also benefitted from some in kind contributions by Laquerre herself and other members of the Science Department.

Foster parenting means opening your heart, home

May 8, 2011

WOONSOCKET - Zinnia N. Gonzalez believes the three qualities one needs to have to be a good foster mother are patience, love and understanding.
If you have those, she says, and you're willing to open your heart and home to a child with physical, mental, or emotional disabilities or a child who’s been abused and neglected, it might just end up being the most rewarding experience of your life.
Gonzalez, 32, is single and has lived in Woonsocket for 14 years. She works full-time for a bank in Medfield, Mass., and she owns her own home on Social Street.
