August 24th
WOONSOCKET â A former employee of a prominent businesswoman has been charged with pilfering nearly $35,000 from the personal accounts of the 82-year-old Slatersville resident.
Danny Michael Jordan, 34, was arrested on a warrant Wednesday charging him with one count each of felony larceny and forgery.
Police reports say he fraudulently drained $34,848 from the personal business accounts of Elaine DiPardo, former owner of the Egidio DiPardo & Sons Funeral Home.

WOONSOCKET â Medical receptionist Lisa Gillespie was going about her chores on the eighth floor of the Cornerstone Building yesterday afternoon when something that isn't supposed to happen did.
âI felt a tremor,â said Gillespie. âThe first thing I did was look behind me to see if anyone else felt it, and one of my co-workers confirmed that she did. The patients in the waiting room felt it, too.â
WOONSOCKET â A passerby trying to save people in a burning tenement ended up the only casualty from the fire at 121 Providence St. early Tuesday.
Police said William A. Paul III was treated at Landmark Medical Center for lacerations to his hand after punching through a window.
There's no way Paul could have known, but no one was inside the three-story, four-family residence when he happened upon the fire during a late-night bicycle ride.
âIt was vacant,â said Lt. Michael Morin of the Woonsocket Fire Department. âIt looked like the whole house was going through a rehab.â

WOONSOCKET â Mayor Leo T. Fontaine remained unopposed in his bid for re-election as the campaign season opened Monday, but who jumps in â and who doesnât â may depend on the outcome of a new poll in which two potential challengers to the first-term incumbent are named.
Cumberland political pollster Joe Fleming said his company has been hired to conduct research on how former Mayor Susan D. Menard or State Rep. Lisa Baldelli-Hunt (D-Woonsocket) would fare in political competition against Fontaine. But Fleming wonât say who hired him.

LINCOLN â You know Linda Oliveira is sincere and serious when she says she loves her massive, long-haired German shepherd Smokey, and has since she first gave him a home at seven weeks.
Still, about the time he turned 10 months old, Oliveira â the owner of Sunset Stables at Lincoln Woods State Park â became worried. Whenever she walked him on nearby trails, he would become overly belligerent with his own kind.
NORTH SMITHFIELD â After considering the number of different groups focused on school athletics and the potential for violations, the school district has made the decision to have one âclubâ as its only athletic program support organization.

NORTH SMITHFIELD - Walmart will close its Woonsocket store on Diamond Hill Road on Tuesday, Sept. 13, one day before the retail giant opens its larger store in North Smithfield at Dowling Village, about five miles away.
Walmart took formal possession of the North Smithfield building at Dowling Village on Aug. 8. The new store, located at 7 Eddie Dowling Highway, plans to open to shoppers at 8 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 14.

PROVIDENCE â As decision day looms for RIPTA, the stateâs public transit authority, to implement massive service cuts that would eliminate at least part of 39 of its 54 bus routes, protests are escalating in from riders and public officials alike.
Pawtucket is one of the hardest hit areas, with several routes reduced or eliminated altogether, and Burrillville and Glocester residents face losing an important transportation link to the central part of the state, many of whom use it to get back and forth from work or school.

WOONSOCKET â Krystal Durkinâs mother, Cheryl Durkin, went to the Police Station looking for answers Thursday evening.
She had spent the early morning hours of Thursday at Rhode Island Hospital watching as the medical staff tried to save her 25-year-old daughterâs life. Krystal, the mother of an infant daughter, Lillianne Fay, had been struck by a car while walking across Mendon Road just after 11:45 p.m. Wednesday. She suffered severe head injuries when struck and thrown a distance down the road.
