Police probing armed robberies

June 23, 2012

WOONSOCKET – Police are investigating a series of three armed robberies at local businesses over the past two weeks.
Police Detective Jamie Paone, department spokeswomman, said the robbers hitting the businesses threatened employees with large wooden sticks in two of incidents while demanding money and threatening employees with a wrench in the third incident.
All three robberies remain under investigation; detectives are probing whether the same robber may have conducted the similar crimes.

Thieves target copper from HVAC systems

WOONSOCKET – First it was the theft of copper pipe from abandoned homes, now local police are investigating the theft of copper from costly heating and air conditioning units atop local commercial properties and businesses.

Derek J. Kunz, who’ll enter his senior year this fall at the Beacon Charter School for the Arts, was one of 15 American high school ballet dancers chosen to spend six weeks of the summer studying Russian language, culture and ballet at the renowned Bolshoi Ballet Academy in Moscow.

YWCA summer program aimed at girls ages 5-9

WOONSOCKET – Summer is here and with it new opportunities at the YWCA on Blackstone Street for girls to make the most of their time off from school.
Meghan Grady, YWCA chief operating officer, said Friday that the organization has created a new summer program for girls ages 5 to 9 aimed at building self-esteem through physical activity and games.
The “GoGirlGo” summer daycamp program was developed by the national Women's Sports Foundation to get young women to develop their interest in athletics at an early age.
