CUMBERLAND â Town Hall employees are trying to cope with the loss of one of their own, following the death of Finance Director Steve Woerner on Wednesday.
Woerner, 61, died after being injured in a recent fall at his home, according to Mayor Daniel J. McKee.
âHe was a good man that we loved down here at Town Hall,â McKee said. âHe was very valuable to the town and a man who was close to a number of people here.â
WOONSOCKET â In a clash with the School Committee, the Budget Commission Thursday voted to adopt a $66.6 million budget to run the education department that calls for shutting down Fifth Avenue School.
The 4-1 vote, in which Mayor Leo T. Fontaine was the only commissioner who sided with school officials, came a day after the school committee approved the same budget for fiscal year 2013, with an unfunded recommendation to keep the school open.
WOONSOCKET â Robert Picard donned a piece of clothing Thursday that he probably earned many years ago: the orange windbreaker of the Grand Marshal of the Autumnfest Parade.
The honor was bestowed on Picard during the Rotary Club's meeting at River Falls and appeared to catch him completely by surprise. Picard is a longtime member and past president of the Rotary Club and has volunteered for the Autumnfest Committee in a number of capacities for more than 30 years.
