August 25th
WOONSOCKET â On Monday, Sept. 3, the Museum of Work & Culture will be hosting its 14th annual Labor Day open house celebration, sponsored by the Rhode Island Labor History Society. Admission is free all day, beginning at 9:30 a.m. until closing at 4 p.m.
WOONSOCKET â Friends and family members watched as the Woonsocket Police Department promoted three officers Friday in a ceremony at Harris Hall.
Edward Cunanan, a law enforcement professional since 1990, was promoted to the rank of lieutenant, while Sean Carpenter and John Raymond were bumped up from officers to sergeants.
During his career at the Woonsocket Police Department, Cunanan has done stints in the juvenile division, the tactical unit and the gang unit. Heâs also a member of the Special Reaction Team (SRT), the Honor Guard, and the detective division, where he currently serves.

NORTH SMITHFIELD - Police seek the publicâs help in locating two men wanted on felony larceny warrants.
The warrants were issued for Larry A. Bates Sr., 52, and Larry A. Bates Jr., 29, both of whom are allegedly responsible for the theft of commercial HVAC units from several businesses in North Smithfield. The dollar amount of the units exceeds $50,000, police said.
Police said the two men may be armed with a gun and operating a 1998 white Dodge with white painted windows. The vehicle's Rhode Island combination plate is 67167.

WOONSOCKET â The School Committee yesterday won the Budget Commissionâs unanimous support to appeal to the state Supreme Court a recent lower court ruling that put the kibosh on its efforts to pry some additional funding from the state to run public schools.
The litigation, initiated in partnership with Pawtucket in 2009, has cost the two cities roughly $275,000 so far, including $102,000 from Woonsocket, according to Samuel D. Zurier, one of the lawyers handling the suit.

BLACKSTONE â Mosquitoes captured from a surveillance site off Gaskill Street, just over the state line from Woonsocket, have tested positive for West Nile Virus, the Bay Stateâs Department of Public Health confirmed on Thursday.
The state now plans on spraying the area with mosquito-killing insecticide after 8 p.m. on Monday. This is the same type of spraying that has been done elsewhere using the pesticide sumithrin, according to the Central Massachusetts Mosquito Control Project.

NORTH SMITHFIELD â As a result of statewide voter redistricting, there will be some changes to voting locations in North Smithfield.
For the first time in years, the Kendall Dean School will no longer be used as a polling place, which now reduces the number of polling locations in town to six.
The polling location changes are among several across Rhode Island this election year as a result of redistricting when political boundaries are redrawn to conform with new population numbers in the once-a-decade Census.

WOONSOCKET â A 23-year-old city policeman who has been suspended without pay and charged with felony assault allegedly choked his 9-year-old sister, according to reports released by the Woonsocket Police Department Wednesday.
Two sisters were at their fatherâs house when the 9-year-old went downstairs where Patrick Cahill was watching television and asked if she could go outside, according to the report.
PROVIDENCE â Painting a lurid picture of what he says is extensive and ongoing voter fraud â people being paid to vote multiple times at different polling places; votes cast in the names of dead people or those who said they would not vote in a given election; mail ballots being âboughtâ â Democratic congressional candidate Anthony Gemma pointed the finger of accusation directly at his primary opponent, Rep. David Cicilline.
August 21st
WOONSOCKET â A city policeman was arrested by his own department on felony assault charges Tuesday for striking a 9-year-old girl, police said.
Officer Patrick Cahill, 23, was taken into custody on a complaint filed by the girlâs mother, said Jamie Paone, a spokeswoman for the Woonsocket Police Department.
She said the girl is closely related to Cahill, but she declined to elaborate, saying the police are trying to protect the privacy of such a young person.
