PROVIDENCE â What are the five most important things to know if you are thinking about running for office? How do you raise money for a political campaign? How can a challenger defeat an incumbent in an election?
Those are just some of the questions that will be raised and answered by some of the stateâs political, media and good-government luminaries at Operation Clean Governmentâs 2012 Candidateâs School.
WOONSOCKET â Even if just a handful of noteworthy sites in the sprawling Blackstone River Heritage Corridor became part of the national park system, as the government recommends, the possibilities for promoting tourism-based economic development throughout the whole region would be greatly enhanced, a top National Park Service official says.
PAWTUCKET â Yes, most of the excitement and suspense of the presidential primary process has fizzled out now that Mitt Romney is the presumptive Republican nominee to challenge Democratic President Obama in November. But Rhode Island is going ahead with its primary on Tuesday.
President Obama is unopposed on the Democratic side, but there is a column for uncommitted delegates.
PROVIDENCE (AP) â The daughter of former Providence Mayor Vincent "Buddy" Cianci Jr. was found dead Friday morning of an apparent overdose, police said.
An autopsy will be done to determine the cause of death of 38-year-old Nicole Cianci, police Cmdr. Thomas Oates III said.
Authorities responded to a residence in the city's Federal Hill neighborhood for a report of an overdose and found Nicole Cianci, who was pronounced dead at the scene, Oates said. He said she was with a male roommate, whom she had been living with for the last few weeks.

WOONSOCKET â A city woman got in a car accident in Smithfield Wednesday morning while driving the vehicle of a man who was later found dead in his apartment in Johnston, according to state police.
Dawn E. Utting, 45, of 75 Union St., was arraigned in Kent County District Court Thursday on charges of failure to report a certain death, reckless driving and operating on a suspended license. She was ordered held without bail at the ACI pending a hearing as a probation violator on a prior domestic disorderly conduct charge.
WOONSOCKET â Plastic bags of litter dangle neatly from the branches of trees. Scavenged bits of furniture are arranged into makeshift outdoor dining nooks, beside the tents. Nearby, a green-necked duck splashes down in the Blackstone River, looking for the expected handout.
âWe have our animal friends,â says Ray Greeno. âWeâre happy here.â
A Vietnam veteran whoâs been homeless for months, Greeno, 57, has been living in a tent on the banks of the Blackstone River since the beginning of the month, when the overnight shelter at Harvest Church closed for the season.

North Smithfield High School students Megan Lefebvre, Emily Richards and Derek Kruzan, from left, join other freshmen in a car wash at the school this past Saturday. The car wash was held to benefit their April 27-May 1 trip to Washington, D.C. for a âWe the People Honors Governmentâ national competition. The 36 freshmen in teacher Natalie O'Brien's American Government class won a statewide competition to compete in the national event â the only freshman class in the nation to do so. They will compete with senior classes from all over the country.
CUMBERLAND â A local company is doing its part to help veterans returning from war get back to work in the civilian job force.
Cumberland-based Jobless Warrior, a new online career enhancing service for veterans, announced this week its official nationwide launch of the service. Veterans across the country can now visit www.joblesswarrior.org to request free resume help, connect with a career coach, join a job networking group, and much more.
WOONSOCKET â The City Council took a tentative first step this week toward trading in a hodgepodge of health care products the city offers various workers for a unified plan that will cover all classes of employees, including teachers, police, firefighters and municipal workers.
The idea was rolled out by Councilman Daniel Gendron as point of departure for continued exploration of the concept. Other members of the council quickly embraced the idea, which would, finance officials say, cut the cash-strapped cityâs hefty health care costs.
