After being promoted to Woonsocket police sergeant, Matthew Richardson has his new badge pinned on him by his girlfriend, Holly Landry, during a swearing-in ceremony at police headquarters Friday. Richardson, who joined the department in 2004, holds multiple commendations for his police work.
WOONSOCKET â City officials will be releasing the findings of an ongoing mid-year audit of school department spending when the City Council meets for a work session Monday evening.
Council President John F. Ward invited members of the School Committee to the session while speaking at the School Committee's meeting at the Hamlet Middle School this past Wednesday.

PROVIDENCE â Two conflicting bills â one that would put a cap on the amount Cumberland fire districts can increase their tax levy and another that would allow the Cumberland Hill Fire District to implement a four-tier tax classification program â were heard by the House Municipal Government Committee Thursday.
WOONSOCKET â After nearly two years, Donald Paterson went to Family Court in his wheelchair Friday to watch as the youth who put him there was sentenced for his crimes.
Jeremy Kerrigan, 18, who has never been identified publicly before, entered a plea of no contest and was sentenced to 20 years, with 10 to serve and the balance suspended, with probation. Kerrigan was charged with one count each of felony assault on a person over 60 and assault with a dangerous weapon for stabbing Paterson in the back in April 2010.

Roberto Colon and Soley Trejos of Woonsocket are the proud parents of identical twin Leap Day boys, Julian, left, born at 3:16 p.m., and Ruben, born at 4:06 p.m. at Landmark Medical Centerâs maternity wing. The couple now has four children, including Roberto Junior, 1, and Tiaynna, who will turn 2 in March.

PROVIDENCE â Movie and TV star James Woods appeared at the Statehouse Wednesday to testify in favor of a bill that would allow doctors and hospitals to express sympathy or acknowledge errors to patients and family members when medical treatment goes awry without it being held against them in later court actions.

WOONSOCKET â Itâs time for the public to weigh in on Steward Health Care Systemâs offer to buy Landmark Medical Center.
The two state agencies in charge of approving the sale have announced that they have begun accepting written comments on the proposal.
In a joint statement, Attorney General Peter Kilmartin and David Fine, director of the state Department of Health, said an open hearing has also been scheduled for the purpose of disseminating information about the proposed sale and gathering feedback on it from interested parties.
LINCOLN â A weekend break in a 20-inch water main had Old River Road closed to traffic Monday as work to repair the leak continued late into the night.
The affected line carries drinking water up from North Providence and supplies a standpipe in Manville but most local services could be rerouted, according to John Faile, town water superintendent.
As a result, only 3 to 4 homes were reported to be without water as the repair was under way Monday, Faile said.
WOONSOCKET â When Evo âCurlyâ Donnini christened it âHampton Courtâ in 1972, the upper deck of his famous Ciroâs Restaurant was already in a time warp â in a good way.
The late founder of Ciroâs envisioned Hampton Court as a sort of Tudor-inspired rendition of a medieval, English castle, circa King Edward III, and he spared no expense in getting the details right. He covered the walls with lavish, oak paneling imported from England, hung hand-crafted chandeliers from the ceiling and plunked French crystal on the tables beside sterling silver dinner utensils.

Twenty years ago, Douglas E. Connell was helping restore a classic car for former Glocester Police Chief Jamie Hainsworth when he happened to notice Hainsworth wearing a ring with a curious symbol: a square and compass joined together with each leg of the compass pointing in opposite directions and the letter G in the center.
"It was a very distinctive ring that had this interesting emblem. It really caught my attention," says Connell, 63, of Woonsocket.
