WOONSOCKET â€“ Detective Capt. Edward J. Lee Jr. of the Woonsocket Police Department is one of four finalists for the police chiefâ€™s job in the nearby Worcester County, Mass., town of Millbury.
Officially, the identities of the finalists have not been made public yet, according to Millbury Town Manager Bob Spain. He said four finalists were chosen by the Board of Selectmen recently and that their names will be disclosed for the first time on Dec. 13, the same night they will be interviewed in public. The panel will then announce their selection on Dec. 18.
WOONSOCKET â€“ The search for a missing man ended tragically Tuesday when police found his body in the Blackstone River hours after they began looking for him.
The body of Andre Genereux, 61, was found in shallow water at the foot of a boat ramp in River Island Park, less than a half mile from his house at 31 Wilson St.
Two patrol officers spotted Genereuxâ€™s body from the Bernon Street Bridge around 2:30 p.m., roughly two hours after police issued a Silver Alert for him.
WOONSOCKET â€“ A gun-wielding crook held up Dunkinâ€™ Donuts on Diamond Hill Road Friday night, but two men who tried to hold up a gas station on Social Street yesterday morning left empty-handed.
Nikhil Makhija, the proprietor of the Valero station at 1023 Social St., told police two men approached him at the counter about 5:54 a.m. yesterday and demanded money.
Police reports say Makhija began yelling and swearing at the men, but they werenâ€™t frightened off until he told them the police were already on their way.
WOONSOCKET â€“ A fire in Main Streetâ€™s historic Commercial Block yesterday forced the temporary evacuation of tenants from 11 upstairs apartments and heavily damaged a convenience store on the ground floor.
Most bystanders never saw the fire, which was largely trapped between the exterior brick wall on the south side of the rambling building and an interior plaster wall.
Capt. Michael Morin, assistant deputy state fire marshal for the Woonsocket Fire Department, said the fire was located above the ceiling of Liberty Market, between the ground floor and second story of the building.

WOONSOCKET â€“ A bid by Mayor Leo T. Fontaineâ€™s administration to boost the cityâ€™s sagging business climate with the rezoning of two currently vacant parcels of land will be considered by the City Council Monday night.
The two roughly six-acre parcels, one running along the entrance of Highland Industrial Park and other at the now-cleared site of the former French Worsted Complex, were both recommended for rezoning by the Planning Board.
WOONSOCKET â€” The city's historic downtown district will be awash in holiday spirit Thursday evening when the 4th Annual Woonsocket Main Street Holiday Stroll kicks off with a celebration featuring live entertainment, carriage rides, food and song, and the traditional tree-lighting ceremony next to City Hall.
Festivities take place from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m.

WOONSOCKET â€” The Historical Society will be hosting its annual Christmas open house on Saturday, Dec. 8 from 1-4 p.m.
Many of the historical societyâ€™s old toys will be on display. Guests are invited to bring an old toy for â€śShow & Tell.â€ť
Also on display will be a personal collection of â€śhead vasesâ€ť that date to the 1950â€™s and 1960â€™s. Head vases depict a womanâ€™s head with a hat and were used by florists for floral arrangements. Today, they are highly collectible.
WOONSOCKET â€“ A 48-year-old city man was charged with domestic assault and related violations after allegedly attacking a roommate during a dispute this week in their Burnside Avenue apartment.
The victim, Babacar Seck, went to the police station to file a complaint against John Trites, 48, after Trites allegedly grabbed him by the throat and pounded his head into the drywall of the apartment during the alleged assault.
