City faces own fiscal cliff

WOONSOCKET — Congress may have gotten the nation past one fiscal cliff, but this teetering city of 41,000 is still on course to fall into a local version of the abyss in 2013.
After the reigning state Budget Commission temporarily balanced the books last year, the financial forecast calls for the city to lapse into deficit spending again by May 25, according to Finance Director Thomas Bruce.

North Smithfield hires three police officers

NORTH SMITHFIELD — After graduating from the Rhode Island Municipal Police Academy last month, three new recruits have joined the North Smithfield Police Department.
Chief Steven E. Reynolds said the officers were sworn in immediately after graduating by Town Administrator Paulette Hamilton and will be assigned to a field training officer.
They’ll spend 14 weeks with their professional mentors prior to patrolling the streets on their own.

Prime Healthcare submits application to buy Landmark

WOONSOCKET — A California-based hospital group’s bid to acquire Landmark Medical Center and the Rehabilitation Hospital of Rhode Island inched forward yesterday as the company delivered its application to purchase the hospitals to state regulators under the Hospital Conversions Act.
State Health Director Michael Fine and Attorney General Peter Kilmartin now have 30 days to determine whether the voluminous amount of paperwork tendered by Prime Healthcare Services is complete.
