January 30th

WOONSOCKET -- A car crashed into a utility pole on Diamond Hill Road, splitting the pole in half, at around 2:15 p.m. In this photo, spectators check out the scene at Diamond Hill Road and St. Leon Street. Witnesses said the lone operator of the Mercedes Benz was checking his cell phone then lost control of his vehicle, taking out the pole and crashing the car into a chain link fence at 797 Diamond Hill Road. The driver, said to be in his mid-50s, was concious but dazed and bleeding from his mouth when taken away by rescue personnel.

WOONSOCKET â The City Council held a âstate of the budgetâ work session with administration and state officials Monday night and settled on a forecast that could only be described as dire and ominous.
Not only is the city once again looking at an operating deficit well over $14 million for the current fiscal year, it could also be dealing with that same figure each year through 2017 if drastic changes to city spending or state financial support are not made.
WOONSOCKET â There may be hope yet for Alexander Kithesâ embattled backyard chickens.
City Councilman Marc Dubois says heâs seriously considering a proposal to lift the ban on keeping chickens, just as other cities and towns have done.
It may be time for the zoning ordinance to reflect modern sensibilities about food as more and more people, like the Kithes, seek to grow their own for environmental and health reasons, he says.

WOONSOCKET â The Budget Commission has refused to let the cityâs plan to privatize a new water treatment plant move forward after hearing from a well-organized band of opponents at its last meeting.
But Mayor Leo T. Fontaine, a member of the commission and one of the staunchest advocates of privatization, says the panel could revisit the issue as early as Feb. 5.
BURRILLVILLE â The Burrillville Police Department has two new officers.
Officers Holly Barrett and Robert Veader were sworn in by Town Clerk Louise Phaneuf on Jan. 23 as family members and friends looked on in Town Hall.
Both officers graduated from the Rhode Island Municipal Police Academy on Dec. 19 and are presently participating in the Field Training Officer Program, said Major Lareto P. Guglietta.
Officer Barrett, 25, is a resident of North Smithfield, a graduate of North Smithfield High School and holds a bachelorâs degree in justice studies from Rhode Island College.

WOONSOCKET â A city womanâs morning traffic mishap landed her stranded in her car on frozen Cass Pond Friday morning and also the target of a rescue by a Woonsocket High School student.
Witnesses saw the car operated by Viengxay Kmon crash through a guardrail near the merge of Elm Street and Cass Avenue at about 7:56 a.m. and then roll down an embankment out onto the ice of the pond nearby Woonsocket High School.
WOONSOCKET â The building problems at City Hall continued on Saturday when a sprinkler system line broke in a little used space of the building and caused a small water problem, according to fire officials.
City Hall and the connected historic Harris Hall building at 169 Main St. lost their main heating system last week and were being kept warm by isolated electric heating systems and space heaters where possible. The problem turned serious by midweek as area temperatures dropped below 20 degrees and raised the specter of frozen water pipes.
