Election season officially under way in Bellingham

BELLINGHAM — Election season in Bellingham is officially under way.
Town Clerk Ann L. Odabashian has posted the calendar for the 2013 town election season. Nomination papers are now available in the town clerk's office; the last day to obtain papers is March 7.
Candidates must return papers with the signatures of at least 50 registered voters by March 26 to make it onto the ballot. The annual town election is slated Tuesday, May 7.

Legislative help may soften financial blow for seniors

WOONSOCKET – With elderly homeowners bracing for a big tax hit as the city addresses its long-term structural deficit, Council President John Ward is offering some legislative help to soften the blow.
Ward is proposing a measure that would simultaneously relax eligibility requirements for the senior citizens property tax exemption while making the benefit more generous.
In recent years, the senior exemption has grown so antiquated that a paltry 19 property owners are currently taking advantage of it, according to the tax assessor’s office.

Tax break proposed for job creators

PROVIDENCE – Two Woonsocket lawmakers — Rep. Robert Phillips and Sen. Marc Cote — want to offer a six-year tax break for businesses that come to or start up in Rhode Island and hire at least two people.
A new company, Phillips told The Call Thursday, would get a 50 percent reduction in its corporate tax for each of the first three years it is in business and a 25 percent reduction for the next three years.
