Former Rhode Island Congressman Patrick J. Kennedy speaks the media following the funeral for his longtime friend Frank DiPaolo, whom he eulogized during Tuesday's funeral mass at St. Pius V Catholic Church in Providence. DiPaolo, who died last Thursday, was 106. He served as the doorkeeper for Rhode Island House of Representatives for more than 30 years before retiring in 2010 and was a political mentor to former R.I. Congressman Kennedy, having met him while Kennedy was a student at Providence College. Said Kennedy, "He was 106, but he never seemed old to me."
WOONSOCKET — Given several options for raising $2.5 million in supplemental taxes, the Budget Commission appears to be leaning toward in favor of one that would place the burden squarely on owners of single-family homes and condos.
The supplemental tax increase would be raised by cutting the homestead exemption from 39 percent to 27.6 percent, and sparing all other property classes, including commercial property, motor vehicles and business equipment.
